Lots of news on the anime front. Seems that Japanese animation will be hitting the US movie screens in the not to distant future.

"Yamato 2199" season 2 (the "Comet Empire"). Based upon their success of Season one ("Quest for Iscandar") Xbec studios has released a two hour movie for season 2 Yamato 2199 series last December (a reboot of the classic 1974 space opera saga). Plans are for 24-26 episodes shown in 4 episode blocks in Japanese theaters then released to DVD.
Live action is “tokusatsu” rather than “anime”, yes?
I’d love for a Robotech movie, however I’m too cynical to think Hollywood could do justice to the story, especially with the amount of plot it has.
Harmony Gold needs something, the franchise is on life support as is.
I have heard they are also making a live action Akira. Although Chronicle was a nice homage to Akira, we need to see the real one in live action.
???
I didn’t say live action and anime were the same thing. Those are two distinct words. One describes an animation style, the the describes a method of displaying images (real versus animation)
Anime to become live action movies in the US
Yes I heard that as well on AMC movies. Just haven’t heard that much movement. Wondering if they’re waiting to see how “Ghost in the Shell” does in the box office???
It was just a question.
Yamato 2199 looks interesting.
I wonder if they will still call it “Star Blazers” when they release it in the U.S.?
When the live action is made for the US market, I think they’ll use “Star Blazers” because that’s what most US fans recognize.
IMO, using the name “Space Battleship Yamato” (a Japanese WW2 battleship) for the US market might not connect.
Just a guess.
I found this good anime site - free good selection of subbed, dubbed including some good high resolution videos too!
Here is the sub title Yamato 2199 - just saw that for the first time last week ... very good!

Yamato 2199 is a VERY good remake of the original Star Blazers. One of the rare anime that’s super high quality and quite adult in content with an ongoing story. It’s true to the roots, follows the original story, the characters look and sound the same, but it’s animated at professional near-movie quality levels in 1080p with superb sound.
They even stick to using the original music and sound effects, but redone in a modern studio.
It’s blatantly made from the ground up to appeal to us middle age adults who watched the very roughly animated original as kids. I could not resist watching it since I was so addicted to it when I was very young.
Frankly, it’s good and episodic in a classic Star Trek way. Great stuff if you love science fiction.
It is completely unbelievable they remade the original in such high quality and detail considering that it must have been a near impossible sell from a marketing standpoint to current young audiences. Someone must have had a lot of pull and money to get this done.
There are other versions of this already that are live-action. Avoid them like the plague, they are terrible.
What’s your favorite Robotech series-Macross, Masters, or New Generation?
I will watch it later.
Loved Star Blazers and Robotech and still do.
Robotech has so much, a single movie just couldn’t work in my opinion but am looking forward to more.
Thanks for the link.
New Gen, Macross, Masters in that order.
*for later*
Definitely Macross. New Generation was second, Masters was third.
Although I didn’t hate Masters like a lot of people did.
Did either of you guys see The Shadow Chronicles or Love Live Alive?
Not Live Love Alive. I heard it was essentially like Dana’s Story or Gloval’s Report, where most of it recaps New Generation. Apparently it only has about 15 minutes of new footage.
Shadow Chronicles was good, even though it was 4 years late. Then they suspended Shadow Rising until after the Live action movie.
Did you hear about their kick-starter attempt with Robotech Academy? It was essentially going to be a relaunch of the Sentinels, but it only got less than half the money needed.
Well, LLA is still worth a look, IMO. If you don’t know if you want to spend the money, you can look it up on YouTube.
