Having a gun inside a thin-walled spacecraft filled with oxygen sounds crazy, writes Simpson, but the Soviets had their reasons. Much of Russia is desolate wilderness. A single mishap during descent could strand cosmonauts in the middle of nowhere.

Always prepared is a good motto.
Space bears are unlikely but you never know.
But they are very common if you land deep in Siberia a few hundred miles off course. Canadian fighter jets have a compact 30-06 in the survival pack for polar bears.
I hear they kept it loaded with the safety off just in case.
Shotgun pistol vass for Zampolits cosmonaut only,in case other cosmonauts want to defect
Or in case God show up.
Jeepers. Is a 30-06 assuredly good enough for a polar bear?
Joe Biden sez to just shoot through the hatch.
Sort of like the west wing of the 1/2 white house.
I always read that the gun was to be used as a defense against wolves. I haven’t read anything about this but truly believe that they had a bad experience with wolves at least once on a landing and the gun wasn’t just provided as a what if. Remember they will never disclose the real numbers on how many cosmonauts they lost.
I think I would prefer a shot barrel Saiga 12 with a big maga, fine filled with slugs rather than that single shot. But, that one pictured might be a good under the coat backup in South and West side Chicago with some 00.
One of the Salyut stations had a external 57mm automatic cannon.
Apparently they even test fired it. Once. The retrorockets mounted on the station didn’t *quite* compensate for the recoil.
Auto correct can make one look like a moron, can’t it
That’s a double barrel, isn’t it?

Having a shotgun and grenade launcher inside a thin-walled spacecraft filled with oxygen sounds crazy, writes Simpson, but the American Astronauts had their reasons. Much of USA is desolate wilderness. A single mishap during descent could strand American astronauts in the middle of Chicago.
there fixed it.
Better than running into the Roxolani invasion fleet unarmed, I guess.
"Survival kit contents check. In them you'll find:
- One forty-five caliber automatic
- Two boxes of ammunition
- Four days' concentrated emergency rations
- One drug issue containing antibiotics, morphine, vitamin pills, pep pills, sleeping pills, tranquilizer pills
- One miniature combination Russian phrase book and Bible
- One hundred dollars in rubles
- One hundred dollars in gold
- Nine packs of chewing gum
- One issue of prophylactics
- Three lipsticks
- Three pair of nylon stockings.
Shoot, a fella' could have a pretty good weekend in Vegas with all that stuff."
- "Dr.Strangelove"
There was one Soyuz capsule that landed way off the Mark, by hundreds of miles. The cosmonauts had to fend off wolves until the recovery team arrived.
Actually it was a 23mm machine cannon much like what they had on their fighters. The Salyut craft were the equivalent of our cancelled Manned Orbiting Laboratory, which was supposed to be a manned reconnaissance platform (even had a Keyhole designation KH-10). So it clearly had a military mission.
Thus the plot for "The Gray". Worst movie ever made. A study in making bad/stupid decisions. It was just a freezing version of "Adventures in Babysitting" with every line in the movie containing the "f" word. I gave up. Couldn't make it to the end.
