I was a Windows user for most of my life.
My family's first computer, which we got in 1991, ran Windows 3.0 and didn't come with a modem. (I remember helping my dad install one a few months later. We signed up for a Prodigy account, and I spent countless hours playing MadMaze after that.)
From then on we were a Windows family. In 1995 we bought a PC with Windows 95 and AOL. In 2000 we got a Dell that we'd eventually upgrade to Windows XP.
It wasn't until I joined the school paper my sophomore year in high school that I tried a Mac for the first time. I didn't look back after that. I declared myself a Mac user for life.
This was shortly after Apple released OS X, the same operating system Macs still use today. It looked better than Windows. It didn't get hammered with viruses and malware like Windows. The programs were more powerful for designing and publishing our school paper. The first thing I did with the truckload of money I got for graduation was buy a PowerBook for college.
Over the past 11 years or so, I barely paid attention to Windows in my personal life. I reviewed a bunch of Windows laptops, but none of them thrilled me. And Windows seemed to be getting clunkier and more complicated, while OS X kept getting cleaner and easier to use.
Windows Vista was a disaster. Windows 7 was better, but it wasn't good enough to make me want to switch. Windows 8 was a mess, and I'd argue that it was a mistake for Microsoft to release it.
But Microsoft's new version of Windows, Windows 10, is different, and I think it's the beginning of a fresh start for Microsoft's flagship operating system.

All you have to do is boot directly to desktop and all your icons are there just like always.
Personally I boot to desktop with icons hidden, and if I need an icon, I just click on the start button and use the tiles as my icons.

No, is free period, but to get it free you have one year to upgrade to it.
Re: Google Chrome replacing IE....
1. Using Google Chrome, is it possible to change color of visited threads on FR?
The “visited” threads are just a slightly different blue/purple than “unvisited” threads that are blue.
About a year ago, I went from Win7 to Win8.1 and did this - took about 30 seconds.
My ASUS Ultrabook boots to desktop in less than 20 seconds.
I very, very rarely use “Start/Tile” screen.
Yet I see so many posts complaining Win8.1 is horrible and they want their “desktop” back to normal. They sound like the perpetual whining class of racebaiters.
Windows 10 will be free to everyone for a one year period when it’s finally released.
If you wait after the one year period, you will have to purchase it from then on.
I installed the 9869 build and now updated it the the 9926 build.
It’s very quick to open, much faster than my previous Win 7
I’m staying with Win 10 and not looking back.
I have seen nothing about the availability of Windows Media Center for win10. Without that I will stay with win7.
I am stil running Slide Ruler 1.0 and it works just fine. No crashes, no waiting forever to download, no viruses, no bullshit.
I wasn’t talking about that, when was the last time you can remember a post about anything Microsoft without the fanboys of the other operating systems promoting theirs as the “one true and best”.
Just another bloated O/S with a bunch of unnecessary crap.
I’m running a Dell Inspiron with a Core 2 Duo 2.0 Ghz CPU, 4 GB of Rams and WXP SP3, which recognizes 3.25 GB of RAM
I also run Avast AV, Malwareantibytes and Hit Man Pro and my PC is squeaky clean, no viruses, no Malware.
Also running Firefox as my Browser and using Ad Blocker Plus, Lightbeam and No Script.
My Brother is running Win 8.1 and the UI is a complete mess and difficult to navigate.
Real men know what “Edlin” means...
Actually started with a wood Slide Rule Version .1. Not great but it got me through High School physics.
Same here, I went from XP to 8.1, and just googled my issues for a couple of days, made the tweaks I wanted, and I love 8.1.
It is weird to see people on the internet, who won’t search for simple computer answers.
That's interesting. And I've heard that. My problem is that the Desktop/Metro separation is the feature I like BEST about 8.1.
It allows for a very clean desktop and the Metro tile based App selection is wonderful. You remember things by position instead of Alphabetical or Most Used at the Top. I like it and would not want to give it up. So if 10.0 does away with that feature I'm going to stick with 8.1.
The reason I like a clean desktop is that I use it too focus on my current projects. I put the folders and shortcuts on the desktop and then remove them when I'm done. Very handy. Back in my Vista Days I had to put 50 shortcuts on the desktop. Not good. The 8.1 scheme is better.
. . . but oh! that decimal place!!!
Congratulations! I do believe that 88 posts before the term "fanboy" was used is a new record.
There is a lot of joking on this thread, but you'll notice there are no insults or name-calling of people who use microsoft operating systems (regardless of versions).
It is a sharp contrast to what happens on Apple threads.
“You remember things by position instead of Alphabetical or Most Used at the Top. I like it and would not want to give it up. So if 10.0 does away with that feature I’m going to stick with 8.1.”
Yes, Win 10 does that. It also remembers any changes you make to the position of your icons.
With Win 7 i had trouble with the changes i made.
Real men use ‘vi’ and take their email on ‘pine’.
I actually have a working Windows 3.1 PC down in the basement. It's been a while since I fired it up but it's a 1993-era IBM PS/1 Model 2133 with a 486DX 33MHz processor and 8MB or RAM (upgraded from the original 2MB). Yes, that's MB, not GB!
It will boot up and I think most of my Prodigy BB files are still intact on there. Remember the Prodigy BBs? They used to have this BB manager program that would let you use the BBs offline. It would then upload your posts and download any new ones that came in. This was because Prodigy would charge something like $3.60 an hour to be online, once your 20 hours was used up.
I got a Prodigy bill over $100 one month and my wife almost divorced me over it.
