Tom Petty has addressed the recent news that he and frequent collaborator Jeff Lynne have received songwriting credit on Sam Smith's hit "Stay With Me." In a statement to Billboard, the rock legend praises Smith for quickly addressing what he calls a "musical accident" -- i.e., the similarities between "Stay" and his hit "I Wont' Back Down."
"Most times you catch it before it gets out the studio door but in this case it got by," he says. "Sam's people were very understanding of our predicament and we easily came to an agreement. "

“My Sweet Lord”/”He’s So Fine”
Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne played with the the Traveling Wilbury’s
Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison, George Harrison
And they made good music together
Great story! Thanks!
I’ve seen Tom Petty many times. Considering his body of work, to my mind he’s one of the greatest writers of the last half century.
I just watched a very short video posted on Facebook by my nephew of my son performing his original song with his band in DC. I miss them both. Feeling weepy. But the song is a railroad song. Evidently one has to do a railroad song, a murder song, etc.
Holy crap, that mashup is outstanding!!!
Ever listen to “My Sweet Lord” and the tune to “He’s So Fine”

Yeah, I remember when George was sued over that. Also Coldplay was sued for stealing the melody for When I Ruled the World from Joe Satriani’s If I Could Fly. They vehemently denied it, but came to an undisclosed settlement. They never did give Joey Sat any credit though.
Maybe the most interesting case was when John Fogerty was sued for stealing from John Fogerty. When they started out, Credence Clearwater Revival signed a really bad long term contract with Fantasy Records that gave Fantasy ownership rights to their songs. A few years later they were the biggest act in the country and John wanted to renegotiate the contract. The owner refused, so Fogerty went Galt, just walked away and refused to record or play concerts until the contract expired. After it did he released a solo album with the single Old Man Down the Road. The owner of Fantasy claimed he stole it from Run Through the Jungle and sued. Fogerty argued he had a right to sound like himself, and won.
Good memories-—I loved CCR.
.
Except when Big Media scams recording artists then he gets downright UN-Laid-back...
Always liked Petty.
