Be warned: enough typos to be annoying, including the fact that they cannot seem to agree on how the woman's name is spelled.
Also did not see how old the dog is, but Bela looks senior, if not really old.
This is a low-volume list so dont worry!
(Please Freep-mail me if youd like to be on or off the list.)
Well, I guess Bela is with her owner, Connie, now. I have known and heard a lot of dogs get ill and pass away shortly after losing their beloved owner.
I'll let others comment on the spiritual matter of someone who would kill their own dog for that reason and in that way...
Do-gonnit!
The woman was concerned the dog may be too aggressive and unstable to be passed off to another person, except apparently trusted this 1 shelter.
I don’t remember how old Bela is, but he looks elder. That may have factored into it, too.
I know I had a demon cat whom I decided was not worth “selling” or otherwise passing off to a particular person. I could not bear that on my conscience; she was that evil. So we gladly sent her to the standard shelter. If someone foolishly picked her up, so be it. Otherwise, she would’ve been euthanized. So be it. Better for her and everyone else.
Well...dig up mommy and re-plant her and Rover together.
From the articles I read on the situation, the woman feared that the dog may be adopted into a family with young kids etc and she didn’t trust Bela’s behavior. Having large, breed dogs over the years.. there is a different “fear” if a larger dog is adopted. For one thing, you don’t ever want them to be used as a fighting dog. You may not want a newbie to the breed decide on a whim that a Doberman/GSD/Rott would be a great addition without prior knowledge or experience either. The owner decided the dog was to live out her life in a sanctuary or be euthanized as a means of preventing injury/harm to others or her dog. I can only imagine she loved the dog or she wouldn’t have gone to the trouble of expressing her wishes in her will. IMHO.
Fair enough, thanks.
I wasn’t blasting you, OK.. I am just seeing it through different eyes. When my Mom was terminal, she was very concerned about her elderly Boston Terrier. Since the dog was a rescue, Mom felt she didn’t want her “taken” in again by “new” people. Buttons (the dog) had some weird issues involving her food and toys. She also didn’t like other dogs. So, my youngest sibling took her. And... like in this article, Buttons got cancer and passed away almost 6 months to the day Mom died.
Turns out there might be good reasons for something like that... next time I'll read before posting. :)
Thanks for helping me out.
Sad situation.
Several years ago a friend of mine (a grumpy recluse) had to go to a nursing home. I took her old as the hills GSD that she had all of her life.
The friend grieved over the situation. The dog grieved for 6 months before she would let me pet her. She finally bonded with two of my “old” girls. A Lab and a Cocker that tolerated her surly demeanor. She never had any use for me. My other three would not put up with her. Keeping everybody separate and happy was a true challenge.
I’ve always questioned if maybe my friend and her cranky pup wouldn’t have been happier going to that great beyond together.
While I’m not old enough to be pondering passing away of natural causes just yet, i have wondered about what to do to provide for my two dogs if I were to die, due to accident or illness. I’d want them to be well-cared for and hopefully loved. Euthanizing them has never entered my mind.
What I have done in the past is talk to friends that I know would take care of my pups should something happen to me. There would be no way they could take the entire pack...but could take one. I have good friends that agreed. Of course they didn’t have to live up to their promises. The pups are gone and so far I’m not, lol.
I also took out pet insurance and put what money I could back for their care should I be unexpectedly be “called away”.
Three of my dogs, including Odin, could probably adapt to another person, if necessary.
Seven, I’m not so sure, which is an upgrade from not that long ago when I’d have said “Oh, hell, no.”.
She’s getting better as she matures.
She used to loathe every living human except us but since I’ve started training her as a support dog, she’s suddenly decided that when “on duty”, humans are to be tolerated.
I never would have imagined she’d ever get this much “sense”, apparently of her own accord.
[Why? Why? Why?]
;]
A good friend of mine had a stipulation in her will regarding her Dobermann.
She knew that he was a menace to anyone else and he’d be put down, if she died.
Luckily, she outlived him.
To this day, she will not have another Dobe because his death crushed her and she can barely stand to even look at Dobes.
Poor fella. Best Friends is known for accepting hard cases, so bless ‘em for trying to do right by Bela.
Years ago they took in a pit bull that pulled a Lassie on a little kid who’d fallen into a well. Not making this up, LOL, the dog’s body heat kept the child warm & safe. But nobody claimed him when they both were rescued from the well, and then the shelter to which he was taken reported he’d bitten a worker & wanted to put him down. Far as I know, he’s still happy & healthy with the good folks in Utah.
If tragedy happens here, Raven is bequeathed to her Godmother Salamander. You are the only person who can figure out why such a dog won’t go up the stairs and stares people down with such glee. HUGS!
Yay!
[we need to work on the stair issue...but not the stare issue]
;D
