Under legislation authored by San Diego State Sen. Marty Block, as many as 15 colleges statewide could offer degrees in fields such as health information management, dental hygiene and biomanufacturing.

Community colleges in the state currently offer 2-year degrees.

KNX 1070’s Pete Demetriou reports California’s Community College Board of Governors is set to select the schools on Tuesday afternoon in Sacramento.

“It would allow 15 pilot community college baccalaureates over the next few years in California,” said California Community Colleges Chancellor Brice Harris. “Most of those will be in workforce-related areas.”

dental hygiene

A bachelors degree in Dental Hygiene? Would that be a BA or a BS?

Many junior colleges have associations with universities and some offer university level classes on line or via webcam on site.

We been doing this in Florida for about 10 years.

Beat me to it :-) the CC's offer a few bachelor's programs, and then can change their names from XXXX Community College to XXXX State College, creating the illusion of greater prestige.

In Michigan there are transfer programs from 2-year schools to 4-year schools. I’m a product of that: Mott College to Michigan State (67). Another, way more prominent transfer was famed aircraft designer Kelly Johnson, he went from Mott to the University of Michigan after two years at Mott. Sadly, most of us don’t put that fact on our resumes. I only found out about Johnson from Mott itself. Would I have stayed at Mott if it was four year? No. State had one of the best programs in the country in my major.

Pretty soon a Bachelors’ Degree is going to be the same as what a High School degree is today. Won’t even get a second look for most jobs.

Illusion? Not sure how it's done in Florida, but in Texas CCs participating in a program like this, you can learn from the same profs that university attendees do.

What they don’t say is that they will still be offering Associates degrees; it will just take four years to get one.

“A bachelors degree in Dental Hygiene? Would that be a BA or a BS? “

Assuming you’re not just being a smart ass, it would be a science. Somewhat like my *thirty six* straight months (yes kids, no summer vacations...just two weeks during which I squeezed in a wedding) of study at community college yielded an “Associate of Applied Science” degree in Radiologic Technology for me.

And I’m pretty sure you are being a smart ass.

And $60,000 in debt.

Recently read that college freshmen reading lists contain books pegged at the 7th grade reading level.
Now that Common Core has saturated k-12 I guess it’s time to give more schools more money to saturate the college level with Common Core. I know that colleges were targeted for Common Core, perhaps it’s already happened. This just seems like a way to transfer funds to Common Core “For the CHildren.”
