It’s like a thought crime! Even the letter he sent to Boehner’s wife didn’t seem threatening.

I can’t understand what he did that warrants more than a trip to the hospital, some psychiatric attention and perhaps a restraining order or something like that.

This is mostly an Obama-inspired distraction to generate some sympathy for Boehner. Especially helped if Boehner goes into rehab for his country club drinking problem.

It wasn't that long ago "thought crimes" were the topic of very chilling Sci-Fi movies. Minority Report (2002) comes to mind.

Thought crime reminds me of the joke about a baseball player and the umpire:
Player asks, “What would you do if I called you an SOB?” The ump replies, “I’d throw you out of the game.”
The player then asks, “What if I just thought you were an SOB?”
The ump says, “I can’t do anything about what you think.” The player then says, “I think you’re an SOB!”
