Father Martin Dolan, who has been a priest at Church of St Nicholas of Myra in Francis Street in Dublin’s city center for 15 years, opened up to his congregation at the Saturday night Mass. He also confided in his Sunday morning congregation. Dolan is the only priest in the parish.
Calling on his Dublin city congregation to support same sex marriage in the upcoming Irish referendum, set for the end May, Dolan said “I’m gay myself.”
Dolan’s statement at Mass on Saturday was met by applause and a standing ovation from his “proud” parishioners.
Speaking to the Irish Sun (subscription needed) community youth worker Liz O’Connor said, “We are all very proud of Fr Martin. Because he has admitted that he is gay doesn’t change the person that he was before he said it."
The admired priest is currently on a pre-planned holiday and will return to his parish soon.
A source within the Catholic Church told the Sun, “It was very brave. He said he was gay. That was it...no bones about it.”
O’Connor echoed the sentiments of the congregation saying she would not want to see Dolan leave his parish after 15 years.
She said, “I wouldn’t like to see him being moved for the statement he made. That would be horrendous. He should be supported. He has done nothing wrong. If he’s moved, there would be uproar in this parish. He’s still the same man today.
The Dublin Archdiocese declined to comment until they had spoken directly to Dolan.
However, the Catholic Church hierarchy in Ireland showed their disdain for the referendum in December 2014.

There have always been dead churches, and if you walk into one it should be obvious when one is dead and when it is alive. Jesus is alive and doesn’t go to dead churches.
I wonder what the congregation would have done had he showed a home bedroom movie of just what his proclivities are? These people who entrust their religious, spiritual and moral guidance in a trusted representative of their CHURCH - their pathway to salvation.
What were they thinking when he confessed this? That he and whatever ‘partner’ he has just hold hands and say “I love you?” Let it all hang out. Put it ALL out there and SHOW the congregation the disgusting and unnatural things he does. If a child were to see it, he/she probably run crying from the room. Just plain disgusting about the inclusive goody-two-shoes Polyanna attitudes some idiots have. Just disgusting.

How does the priest know he is gay? Has he been having sexual relations outside of his vow of celibacy?
If he is attracted to men, so what? It is not sin until he actively seeks to act out on his desires.
So again, being homosexual means performing the act - has he been having relations in defiance of his vow of celibacy?

I remember reading something years ago about southern boys poking holes in sun-warmed watermelons and getting their jollies out in the fields. If they admitted this to a crowd, would this make them brave? Clever? Wonderful? Fascinating? Would they get a standing ovation?
When are we going to stop informing everyone about how we get our orgasms? It’s not that interesting.
And am I to assume he is practicing his homosexuality?
Good questions which, apparently, nobody dares ask. Why can’t he just STFU and do his job?
