Today's feature is a crime thriller from Alfred Hitchcock's pre-Hollywood career. He explores his frequent theme of an innocent man on the run helped here by a young and innocent teenage daughter of an English police constable. Hitch's cameo is at 15:29-15:46, making perhaps his longest cameo that I can remember from any of his films.

That black-face! I don't even understand why it was stylish but it
was clearly not meant to be racist. Imitation is the sincerest
form of flattery.

I think it’s one of the more underrated or at least underappreciated of Hitchcock’s 1930s films.

I thought the blackface sequence at the end added a lot of suspense since we saw the actress’ husband in the opening scene twitch his eyes.

Yes, it was a clever way to extend the suspense.

I bet the girl was considered to be beyond modern - cranking her own car and running off with a man and staying out overnight!

And, her first-aid procedures - amusing.
