That’s my guess too. We have seen too many cases of threats which turned out to be hoaxes. Such as, black people finding nooses, and then it turned out they planted the noose themselves.

Or the case of the lesbian girl couple, who painted anti homosexual graffiti on their own house, to try to claim they were the victims of an intolerant community.

So I would not be surprised if activists have made threats against one of their own to try to show how intolerant and bigoted the rest of us are. Would not surprise me at all.
