‘...who said they found a “stiletto folding knife with a 3.75-inch blade, which uses a thumb stud and assisted opening mechanism.”’

Anyone want to guess the specific knife it might be?

The dreaded switchblade. Never did understand why the fixation on how the knife opens.

What’s the difference in time, 1/10th second?

Cold Steel ‘Tilite’ maybe?

People get the stiletto mixed up. A stiletto is a narrow, double-edged blade, long enough to reach any internal organ. Most closely related to 6” or longer daggers.

Just a guess.

It was probably one similar to this discontinued Amazon item: Just like other folding "tactical knives" you can buy for around $10 at Walmart or Harbor Freight just with a "stiletto" style blade. They are not "switch blades"; there is no spring that helps open the blade. You push the blade open with your thumb using the "stud". If you practice, you can flick it open pretty much instantly giving the impression that it had a spring assist. If he would have remembered to throw it out the window after accidentally nicking someone with it... we wouldn't be reading about it here.
