The next is a bit of a spoiler.
It was a good movie to show the sheer endurance our men had, first, to survive the plane crash, and, second, to endure the harsh treatment at the hands of the Japanese. The negatives of the movie are that it didnt set up the absolutely hopeless and destructive course Zamperini was on in the beginning of his life and that he turned to running to give his energies an outlet. It was covered but not as forcefully as it could have been. Then, the movie lurches to the bombing mission, and the problem the squad had in getting the plane to fly. They were basically ordered to go up in a plane that was patched together with leftovers and that is why it didnt survive the SAR mission it was on.
Next we saw the endurance during the time as a POW. But, Jolie tried to cram too much in too little time and all of a sudden the war is over. They go home and the movie is over. Zamperinis faith is covered as a printed epilogue in the closing moments on the screen.
The story is powerful. Jolie is not.
Now we understand why the liberals have been attacking Jolie and her movie as of late; it has a Christianeque message and they no likey anyone they have to be accountable to.
We saw this yesterday. We were all disappointed in the fact that the movie dwelled mostly on the suffering, first in the water and then in the POW camps. After the first few violent scenes, I really would have liked to see more of his life, any camaraderie with the other POWs, etc. I already knew about the cruel torture of the Japanese in the POW camps. I realize the story was called Unbroken, but to see nothing but beatdowns for nearly 2/3 of the movie really was sensory overload. I look forward to seeing a movie about his life, not just his suffering.
