Freeper tech gurus

I have a Motorola surfboard that has served me well for 8 years. It is probably Docsis 2.0...... I am topping out at 30 mbps which is good enough. Some internet reports say I can double this speed with a newer Docsis 3.0 modem

I get phone calls from Comcast saying I will need this newer type modem or will have trouble with reception due to them upgrading where I am to a docsis 3.0 system. So I need the compatible modem

Do I really need the newer 3.0 modem?

THANKS!

I hear yah. Most of that blazing new speed is not utilized by the average schlub...or anyone

Though it was useful the other day to download a large file. It is useful for Netflix and other movie streaming which I rarely do

When Charter increased available bandwidth to consumers in my old neighborhood, my docsis 2.0 began cable modem began to flake out. Charter stated I needed the 3.0 upgrade and with it have 60Meg (not that I needed that amount). I argued this with them quite a bit....

A few weeeks later I moved and had the pleasure to remove that inferior product with FiOS at a new address. I’d highly recommend that product, their modem and DTV receivers, all of it. It’s nothing short of awesome.

For some reason this whole thread reminds me of Archie Bunker and what’s her name singing “gee our old La Salle ran great”

I went Doc 3 long ago. Well worth it. Motorola SB6121. It bonds to 4 channel down. However, my ISP now has 8 channels down so will soon upgrade to SB6141 (?) which bonds to 8 ch. Less than $100. Well worth it IMO.

I had the same situation with Comcast about a year ago. I can’t stand something that only works half-assed; so when they told me I needed a new modem I got one. The Motorola I’d used for 10 years or more cost me $0. I forget the cost of the modem it’s been so long ago, but there was a mail-in rebate which made the modem For Free.

This time Comcast said I could rent a new modem from them, or go buy one. I bought one at Best Buy, unhooked the old one, hooked up the new one and had Comcast Tech Support pronounce their blessing on it electronically through the internet, and it works perfectly with the latest Comcast technology.

While you are at it threaten Comcast with a cancellation like i did, i went from 20 Mbps to 90 Mbps for the same price in the course of a 10 minute phone call.

It pays to mess around with Comcast and pit them against their ISP competition. Well done by you! I have a good deal currently...6 months until I have to talk to them again

8 years = so obsolete that it’s amazing it still works - get a new modem.
