The Economists Who Studied All-You-Can-Eat Buffets

When I was a kid, the paradox of choice didn't occur to me. I wasn't yet overwhelmed by the "tyranny" of too many options, nor stressed with decision making if more options were presented to me. That might be why I fell in love with buffets. Not only were they reserved for special family occasions (like the holidays or a birthday)—I could eat chicken nuggets beside slices of cantaloupe, or mac and cheese beside jello salad.

Buffets are now big businesses, particularly in Las Vegas. The buffets in Vegas are no longer the dollar bargains they once were in the late 1950s. They're fancy productions with Kobe beef and king crab legs that can cost over $50.

Buffets are good as an unusual event, however, Americans tend to miss out on a lot by not varying *how* they eat as much as what they eat.

The “Midwest sit-down gorge” with either all the food on the table at once, or in a buffet line, was how farm families used to eat. At a given time, everybody would stop working, assemble in the dining room, and gorge until they were full. Then back to work.

However, when you have a more relaxed life, you don’t have to do it that way. You can have smaller meals that take longer, more often, and enjoy them more. For a main meal, you can eat in courses, even with breaks in between courses.

All you can eat buffets are a rip off unless you weigh 300 lbs and can’t get enough to eat. The average person only wastes his/her money on them.

Casino buffets are only really good in the first few months they are open/reopened. After that, the accountants start screaming and the quality goes down - sometimes way down.

Currently, I can only recommend the newer one at Caesar's Palace - and it's very expensive - and the one at Bellagio. Everything else is extremely hit and miss, they have good and bad days depending on who is working. Usually, you are much better off getting a recommendation for a good off-Strip restaurant.

I used to like buffets sometimes, but then it occurred to me that having a lot of folks touching utensils was a sure-fire way to get other folks’ colds, flu, or perhaps worse.

Just call me a hypochondriac, but not everybody washes their hands in the restroom and kids will wipe snot off their nose with their hands. No health inspections for the line filing through the buffet.

Yes, but we we were talking all you can eat buffet joints. Nice try at a rebuttal.

We typically go to the local buffet only when we have a coupon. I'm not going in order to save money. I'm going in order to have a variety of foods which I normally don't make myself. It's not fine dining, but I can always find things I enjoy.

Actually, my husband does get his money's worth. He's 6'3" and built like a football player. When he's been out shoveling, like this afternoon, he can eat like a football player too! :-)

The “Midwest sit-down gorge” with either all the food on the table at once, ...
*************************
In 1968, my company sent me to the Univ. in Iowa City IA for a 10 day statistics training course. ...On the middle weekend, five of us drove to the Amana Colonies and did the “sit-down gorge” meal.

It was fantastic! Long tables that seated probably 20 people, with large bowls of corn, mashed potatoes, other vegetables, platters of great steaks and pork chops, iced tea, freshly baked bread and butter. I think it cost each of us about $8. Probably the best food I’ve ever had.

Skip the buffets next time and go to the Carter Green Steakhouse at the Island View Casino in Gulfport.

I live here and agree - there are many very good dining establishments - both in and out of the casinos.
