Now, what once was one of the premier venues in the world is a tattered, empty reminder of the stadium's memorable past - and of the dismal economy in Michigan.
Last month Michigan's sometimes harsh weather put pay to the final sections of the old stadium's Teflon-covered roof which just dropped to the field.
Afterwards Ohio-based photographer Johnny Joo visited the abandoned stadium and his photos offer an eerie, empty look at a stadium that once held nearly 100,000 people.

Spend a million or two, and they can fix it up to use as an emergency detention center during periods of unrest.
(This is a traditional use of unneeded stadiums, if you know your modern history.)

It was doomed from the second the deal to build Ford field was signed. The silverdome doesn’t have any real history behind it so it should be razed and the land open for development.
The Joe Louis arena won’t face the same fate when the Red wings join the Tigers and Lions in one place.

Hell with spending a mil on it.
If it comes down to using it for “community organizing” after thirty minutes no one will know the difference. The “ community would still b**** and moan if they all had spanking new skyboxes.

Exactly. In fact its a smart move to have all of the big league teams together in one area. The Red Wings will be in their new arena in 2016 and the Pistons will likely follow soon after.
The red outline is where the new ice arena and other sport related buildings are going up.

One of the saddest examples of the dramatic decline of Detroit and the surrounding area is what remains of the Pontiac Silverdome....There are plenty of examples of dramatic decline in Detroit/Pontiac but the Silverdome is not one of them. The Silverdome was replaced by a brand spanking new field, Ford Field.
That would be an example of improvement.
