I grew up in LA, but I escaped when I was 19 way back in the 80’s. The only thing worth a krap in LA is Tommy Burgers (only the one on Beverly and Rampart). Otherwise it is a concrete large version of Tijuana without all of the class and charm.

Best gal watching —— Any large Mall.
Super duper spot to wait for Mrs. is the benches in front of Victoria’s Secrets at the South Coast Mall.

well, I remember the good old SLO county sheriff...
who, to prove his crime-fighting bonafides,
would regularly “discover” and “raid” that DEN of INIQUITY, the Nipomo Mesa Cock Fighting Arena....
firmly arresting a handful of (mostly) Mexican celebrants...
but only when he had channels 3, 6, and 12 with the SLOTT, SMT, and FCTPR newspapers all lined up there to take his picture with his Strong Arm of the Law securing the necks of a couple of poor spectators

of course, when the re-election campaign was safely in the Bag, the sheriff promptly lost all knowledge or recollection of the existence of Popper’s Arena (after all, it was easy to ignore if you want to sit on your butt and do nothing for your paycheck. it was only the most popular site in the area... with permanent spectator stands, permanent buildings, plus a very large parking area and dozens of beer, taquila, taco and burrito and chili vending trucks). That was in the 60’s.

Interestingly, it seems nothing has changed in the past half century (except the birds have moved a couple miles closer into the city (Santa Maria))...

I still find things to love about California. Plus it’s the home of one of our national heroes, “Jim Thompson”... : )

Visiting there and working there are TWO ENTIRELY DIFFERENT THINGS.

Living there you have to pay their incredible taxes (including on gasoline, driving its cost to nearly $1.00 than the rest of the country)...visiting, only when you’re there. Phenomenal scenery too, starting with Yosemite (absolutely mind-blowing to be in the valley there).

By the way, they missed two key reasons: Tommy’s and In-And-Out (although In-And-Out has expanded outside of California). Also lots of other great food there.

#31 The Caltech bookstore. And if your lucky, catch a lecture. Fascinating stuff.

I saw Sheldon there once with his friend and not his girlfriend, making fun of a guy giving a talk about his science book.

That is the truth. Some real stunners.
They grow real nice in the California sunshine.

Only good thing I can say about it, it’s awfully nice to have 75-, 80-degree weather with gorgeous blue skies when the rest of the country is buried in snow, slush, and below-zero wind chills. I have to try not to gloat too much when talking to relatives during the winter. Aside from the weather, though, LA is getting less and less desirable as a place to live.

I used to live in the Long Beach area. The beach and the San Pedro port are classic sights/touristy hot spots.

I no longer live in California because of the cost of living, oppressively high taxes and stifling regulations.

Southern California is a great place for tourists to spend a good time but you couldn’t pay me enough to live there.

Its overcrowded and with a very liberal tilt. No conservative will win there in my lifetime.

Ah yes, those were the days! {^) Cockfighting has gone in in South County for ... a long time, from what I understand!

Maybe it doesn't look like much has changed ... and in good ol' Santa Maria maybe it hasn'. But SLO Co is very different from what it was 30 years ago. Such is life -- all things change. When things STOP changing is when there's something to worry about.

All I gotta say is I love visiting and love the memories and am glad I didn't grow up in So Cal, but I love So Cal dearly. I can see why folks who grew up here need to escape. What's an odd phenomenon is that often as not, they take attitudes and expectations with them and transfer some of the L.A. stuff they were trying to leave behind, without even knowing it. I expect I do the same vice-versa.

You can run but you cannot hide. God bless you and yours and Merry Christmas!!!
