Word For The Day, Wednesday, December 17, 2014-- higgledy-piggledy

;

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

[hig-uh l-dee-pig-uh l-dee]

hear it pronounced

adverb
in a jumbled, confused, or disorderly manner; helter-skelter.

adjective
confused; jumbled, chaotic, messy

Origin: "confusedly, hurriedly," 1590s, a "vocal gesture" [OED] probably formed from pig and the animal's suggestions of mess and disorder. Reduplications in the h-/p- pattern are common (e.g. hanky-panky, hocus-pocus, hinch(y)-pinch(y), an obsolete children's game, attested from c.1600).

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

I haven’t seen that one. I’m trying to learn some closed chords on mandolin and traveling up and down the frets in scales doing improv. It’s harder than piano, probably because I am clueless in paying attention to the theory.

I couldn’t stay up to watch the Caps/B’hawks 24-7 last night, but xshub DVRed it for me. Said a good bit of it focused on Barry. Xsbaby is happy because she loves tom Wilson, he’s her new fave, and he and Latta were featured, as they are roommates.

We barely beat the Bruins last night in a shootout. I will have to look for that episode online somewhere.

My former boss used to say “higgledy-piggledy” on a regular basis. I always thought he’d made it up.

It’s a classic. Dangerfield is a regular joe whose mother-in-law is a tough old battle axe who hates him. She passes away and leaves him millions.

But only if he gives up drinking, smoking, fatty foods, gambling, etc.

It’s no Lebowski or on anyone’s top ten lists, but it has its moments.

I saw on Twitter last night that that was going on, but didn’t know who won.

When they go that far do the backup goalies have to take a shot? When do they start recycling shooters?

I used to like Piggly Wiggly because they had great fresh produce, but there hasn’t been one within more than 100 miles that I know of since the late 70’s...

The higgledy piggledy mess
Obama has made of the laws
Makes him look schizophrenic
And gave many people pause-

Which got them out to vote
For changes that are needed
And in spite of the howling
Those voters really succeeded

In the tossing out of office of
Piggy Landrieu and her like-
And even better, in January
Harry must hand over the mike...

There was a locally owned grocery store/general store in the nearest town when I was a kid, like there is out here now, but the nearest supermarket/grocery some 30 miles away was Piggly Wiggly-are there any left in Texas?

I don’t know if they have a limit, like ten, before they start over or if they have to literally have the whole bench take a shot.

It started raining off and on just before noon, drowning work-I stopped on the way home, got molasses, white flour and more raw brown sugar, I just took the first batch of gingersnaps out of the oven and they smell yummy...

The wife brought home chocolate chips and mashmallow fluff. That’s fudge in the future.
