FULL TITLE: Three school teachers set to be fired after private chat room emails reveal shocking discussion about their 'moron' special needs students
Three elementary teachers in a New Jersey school district have been caught having a shocking conversation about some of their special needs students, referring to them as 'morons' and 'short bus kids' - and are now set to be fired as a result.
The teachers - Tyler Van Pelt, Maria Weber and Maryellen Lechelt - allegedly engaged in an inappropriate online discussion on October 23 while training in a new technology to be implemented in their school district of Edison, however were unaware that the chat room could be accessed by others in the program.
Another teacher in the room suspected the trio were making fun of her after hearing them laughing and soon stumbled upon a transcript of their vulgar chat, which she then sent to her principal.
The three were suspended with pay - as per procedure - and are accused of unbecoming conduct, insubordination for misuse of school technology, failure to pay attention to the training and violating the district's sexual harassment and affirmative action policies, among other charges, NBC New York reported.

There was a quote I saw on FR of some union official when confronted about “Well - what about the children?!”
Something like: “As soon as the kids start paying union dues, we’ll worry about them.”
Yea, wouldn’t want to insult the “window-lickers”. LOL!
Never heard that expression before, had to look it up in the Urban Dictionary to make sure I knew what the reference meant.
“Never put anything in writing, it sounds so silly in court.”-A Famous actress from the 1930’s or 40’s whose name I cannot remember.
Hard to have a lot of sympathy for anyone these days who has not realized that anything you put in print (digital or paper) can and likely will be seen by people it was not intended for. On the other hand, I’m tired of people getting fired for speech that may or may not reflect how they feel. Free speech should mean just that - PC should not override it.
iirc it was the president of the teachers union at the time
No, they are. They are merely suspended with pay.
Do you know how difficult it is to fire a public school union teacher???

I’m a JROTC Instructor. Some of the Special Ed kids are placed in our program. They are the sweetest kids you’ve ever met! If anyone messed with one of them every cadet in the corps would be on them like white on rice.
There is something fundamentally wrong with these “educators.”
That got me laughing. Good shot.
There is something fundamentally wrong with these educators.
It sounds like you are doing something fundamentally right with your charges. Well done.
A friend of mine was talking about his big brother the other day and said “He should have been on the short bus his whole life.” I laughed my butt off. I’d never heard that before.
I guess that the teachers aren’t any brighter than the students that they were disparaging.
the money is good, especially for those with a aversion to physical labor.
I have a relative who absolutely can’t stand “Special Needs” kids (talks as if she hates them), and she is in charge of the Special Education program for an entire school district. I feel sorry for the kids in the program.
Mea culpa; That’s what I get for not reading the whole article and misreading the part that I DID read. I will change that to “Now I hope they are not, real soon...”
If they were true Special Needs Students then yes the teachers need to be fired and have no business in any classroom. Here's the problem. "Mainstreaming". Special Needs students need qualified Special Education Teachers who have the GOD given gift to be able to help them. Most teachers do not have that gift and a small handful of bad apples lack any humanity or compassion to even be allowed near them.
I was a special needs student in a special education school for two years. Thanks to the very gifted and dedicated teachers and Occupational Therapist I had nearly twenty productive years in the work force including a four year Navy enlistment and a National Guard enlistment.
The Special Needs/Special Education schools in my youth were born of a horrible pandemic that left kids crippled for life that is if they even survived. There were also CP, MD, Deaf, Blind, Autistic, Dyslexic, ADD/ADHD, Open Spine, and kids with very screwed up sensory processing like myself in the school. Yes I rode the short bus and yes I was called Tard for doing so.
I'm glad my parents had the wisdom to allow me to go there. It would forever change my life and prepare me for my adult life to follow including marriage to a severely physically disabled woman whom I deeply love.
Oh and my Mom became a Special Education Teachers Aide and "short bus" driver. She put in over 20 years. Special Education kids have enough to deal with and overcome without Idiot Adults having their laugh at their expense. My guess is the teachers were Obama voters and Planned Parenthood shills etc.
We were not taught that we were a protected class of students rather most had to work far harder to get the progress they achieved than most students in regular classrooms. As such I am 100% against mainstreaming because the loosers in it are the kids who really need the extra help and regular schools simply are not set up nor qualified to deliver the services needed. Many get shoved aside because the teacher either doesn't have time or in some cases care and calls it a waste of time.
I agree. Read Post 38. I'm a former Special Needs Student.
