I think the guy did what he did for his children. Likely, the ex wife and family needed killing and this lad did the deed plus all the close relatives to protect the kids. He knew he was done when he whacked her but wanted to clear the field so the children had a chance.
I doubt that the military experience had anything to do with this so you anti military sob sisters can go pound sand.

Really, excessive booze and wrongful living on both sides (and maybe drugs) probably had something to do with it in that case. Chances are, on average, men with prior service live cleaner—especially those who are initially checked out more thoroughly and trained harder.
