In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
calumny \KAL-um-nee\ noun
1. a misrepresentation intended to harm another's reputation
2. the act of uttering false charges or misrepresentations maliciously calculated to harm another's reputation
Example sentences:
The notion that the mayor knew about the problem before the newspaper broke the story is nothing but calumny.
"Some say that showing respect for your opponent after heaping disrespect upon him
and having disrespect heaped upon you civilizes our politics. In truth, however, it degrades our politics. It says that anything goescalumny and character assassination are all just part of the rough and tumble of campaigning.
"
Eric Zorn, Chicago Tribune, November 7, 2014
Etymology:
Calumny made an appearance in these famous words from Shakespeare's Hamlet: "If thou dost marry, I'll give thee this plague for thy dowry: be thou chaste as ice, as pure as snow, thou shalt not escape calumny. Get thee to a nunnery, go." The word had been in the English language for a while, though, before Hamlet uttered it. It first entered English in the 15th century and comes from the Middle French word calomnie of the same meaning. Calomnie, in turn, derives from the Latin word calumnia, (meaning "false accusation," "false claim," or "trickery"), which itself traces to the Latin verb calvi, meaning "to deceive."
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)

Calumny failed the grand jury test,
truth won out and it was for the best.
Shouting hands up, don’t shoot
they went on a rampage to loot.
As Ferguson burned they feathered their nest.
A+ for you! Love those little cartons for takeout.
In all 57 states too. A for you! Are you going to Memphis this month?
A+ for you and I’m glad you made the best of your situation and had more time together.
Obama’s clumsy, columny backdrop at his induction in 2008 as “President-Elect” was only the first calumny against the High Office he regrettably holds
Thanks, tioga. Are you staying warm? We ran out of fuel 2 nights ago and are still waiting for a delivery. I have a gas heater in my rooms so it’s not so bad for me.
That’s awful. We are warm, just some snow out there.
A+ for you!
oh wow, well sounds like you enjoyed some extra time with them and everyone made it safely home.
OMG i am trying to construct a shutterfly picture book for my brother’s family, of wedding pix, and i cannot figure out for the LIFE of me how to get the pix uploaded to that site. it’s driving me insane. i have tried dragging the file of wedding pix, no dice. i have tried four separate times to drag individual pix into the shutterfly account and THAT isn’t working. honestly i am at my wits end with this, it should NOT be this hard!
Finishing up invoices to deliver in the rain, but the trip will take me to the general store and deli 8 miles away, and I’ll treat myself to a turkey-cheese-and-veggie whole wheat pita to bring home for dinner this evening...
Obama’s minions screwed up
Really bigtime now, I think
By digging again in the CIA
Hoping for the hint of stink
A last brush to tar Bush with,
So Fineswine will be going out
By figuratively showing her ass-
At least now no one can doubt
She only cares about herself-
But Obama’s minions may learn
That even if it takes awhile
The CIA can cause you to burn...
Their first flight today was delayed. It isn’t looking good.
I wish I could help you. Grab the in-house IT guy. He’ll do it in seconds and act like it was no big deal.
I love this story. Mind games!
Johnny will make him pay for it, on the scoreboard, where it counts.
Only thirty-five posts after a whole day of opportunity?
Whassamatter wit youse guys? Afraid of a little calumny?
I say give me a big helping, and sprinkle it with vituperation. Spite is the spice of life.
Or, as Captain Jack Sparrow could have said, “I might have deserved some of that.”
A for you!
That’s what I had for lunch, minus the veggies. I never get tired of turkey. A+ for you!!

NatGeo has a reality type series with 4 couples from South Dakota doing the covered wagon thing, homesteading like pioneers for three months. Only one couple has wilderness experience-a middle-aged long haul trucker and his wife, an EMT/paramedic-they are experienced wilderness campers and he teaches survival skills.
The rest are city living/working people, and pretty clueless-they’ve already argued about the necessity of bringing a goat along on a wagon-the EMT asked the other women if they did not understand the nutritional need for milk, butter and cheese, and got a nasty blank look, so she reminded them that they were going to homestead on the bare land, like their ancestors-as in no grocery store-they are also going to have to build and live in soddies.
I wonder how they will react when they realize what the caged chickens are for, or why the men are carrying long guns-The women are already fretting in their long skirts, too-this looks like it should be interesting...
