Police in Sweden carried out a raid in Stockholm today, seizing servers, computers, and other equipment. At the same time The Pirate Bay and several other torrent-related sites disappeared offline. Although no official statement has been made, TF sources confirm action against TPB.
For many years The Pirate Bay has been sailing by the seat of its pants so any downtime is met with concern from its millions of users.
This morning, for the first time in months, The Pirate Bay disappeared offline. A number of concerned users emailed TF for information but at that point technical issues seemed the most likely culprit.
However, over in Sweden authorities have just confirmed that local police carried out a raid in Stockholm this morning as part of an operation to protect intellectual property.
There has been a crackdown on a server room in Greater Stockholm. This is in connection with violations of copyright law, read a statement from Paul Pintér, police national coordinator for IP enforcement.

Amazing what billions of dollars can do. Like force foreign Governments to bypass around their own laws.
Pirate Bay gets raided about every 5 years. Then apologies are issued and it goes on again.
yes, but don't you find the timing interesting?
By this time I expect that they have 40000 mirror sites set up, and will be back up in 24 hours.
Thankfully I dont depend on that site.
Excellent tagline! I dig it!
With the way things are headed I expect a windowless black van with government plates to whisk me way never to be heard from again and it will be mostly because of my tagline on FR.
Am I the only one who doesn’t know what this website is, or was?
I don’t know either. I clicked on the story because I like pirate stuff.
condensed version.
The piratebay is a torrent site that is huge and one can download about any movie or TV show for free.
It has been running for years. The thing is in Sweden it is not against the law to have such a site. Or wasn't. BUT BigMEdia pays Swedish government officials big bucks to circumvent Swedish law and courts to occasionally shut the site down.
A couple of days ago Sony got hacked AND lots of their brand new movies that are not even in the theaters yet got downloaded as well as some embarrassing emails of big Sony execs. All has been available on Piratebay.
Then bang the site is shutdown, and as far as I know Swedish law has still not made having such a site illegal. BUT when you have hundreds of billions of bucks like Sony , laws and courts are yours to manipulate anyway you want.
Arrgghhh
“Torrent Freak” sounds suspect too.
Free the left-wing drivel!
Well, the Sony hack strikes me as different. Stealing copyrighted material is illegal everywhere, even in China supposedly.
Argh, matey!
OK to understand the piratebay does not have any movies stored on its site.
They are akin to drudge in that aspect. (Drudge does not host news stories he provides links to those stories)
They are basically a site that links torrents (files to be downloaded).
In Sweden it is not illegal to have such a site.
Sucks! How Am I going to get TMNT and “Once upon a Time” just for starters. Anyone know of another site for TV show torrents?
Gee the one time I get a movie and they raid the place the next day!
I dont know either. I clicked on the story because I like pirate stuff.
