For the first time in Major League Baseball -- or in any major professional sport, actually -- a game official has come out as gay. It's veteran MLB umpire Dale Scott.
Outsports.com has a lengthy feature on Scott, so definitely hop over there if interested in the full version.
The basics are that Scott has long been out to colleagues but it wasn't made public. He was profiled in Referee Magazine back in October and sent them a photo to use with Scott and Michael Rausch, Scott's domestic partner of 28 years. The two were recently married.

As long as it's not Enrico Pallazzo.
LOL!
The timing is different I believe. He left baseball as an ump and then admitted his preference. This column is from 1988 and titled “Resign Now or Be Fired, Pallone Told”:

During his time in the majors, Pallone was often among the lowest-rated umpires in the NL.
Pallone admitted an ongoing dispute with Cincinnati’s Dave Concepcion that began in 1983 and confessed he sometimes tried to block the infielder’s view. Last year, Pallone ejected Concepcion for arguing a called strike but later acknowledged, “I missed the pitch.”
Pallone also had a disagreement with then-Montreal pitcher Jeff Reardon, who said the umpire threatened to “bury” him. Pallone denied making that remark.
Several years ago, Pallone publicly said he had run up a gambling debt of more than $1,000 while betting on sports events other than baseball. It was never alleged Pallone bet on any baseball games, although his gambling drew concern from baseball officials.
As a family, we started watching the a950’s Disney version of “The Swamp Fox” starring Leslie Nielsen. I couldn’t stop chuckling to myself whenever he’s give those serious lines. My kids don’t know him in the other roles, so they didn’t see the same humor.

Dale came out at the ball game,
Dale came out from the crowd;
‘Loves him some pen__ & BF Jack
He don’t care if he gets any flak.
So it’s root, root, root* with the “home team”
Disapprove you’re to blame.
For it’s one, two percent who’re out,
At the old ball game
[* Kiwi slang ]
Pallone wasn’t “openly gay” and this Ump is still working and is “openly gay”? or am I confused? Pallone’s book was interesting as to whom he outed without “outing”.
Now that he is the “first”, the gay lobby can move on now.
Queer life is a no-go in most Latino cultures. I suspect this is going to be a big problem for a large number of MLB players.
oops, I forgot my manners. Thank you for the link!
who asked?
People looking for their 15 minutes of fame for being “so brave” as to come out as gay had better hurry- it is rapidly becoming clear no one cares
Next will be the Yankee ground crew members as a group while doing the YMCA song. Then I want one of the NFL side line babes to be a transvestite. We need more diversity and disclosure....NOT!.
That is how I understand it. Pallone had what seem to be existing issues at the time that caused MLB’s ire.
Runner slides into second but the infielder gets there in time.
D Scott: You’re out!
Runner: (laughs) So are you.
Let’s just get back to the days of joking about their
poor vision...
Umpire: It’s right here in the rule book...
Earl Weaver: That’s no good! I can’t read Braille!
Hard to keep up with the revelations of who’s “gay”.
who cares, keep this crap off here
I was sitting nearby when a mutual friend was on the phone with Leslie Nielsen once. The guy had known Nielsen since the early-1950s and his days of live tv in NY, and he was chuckling to him about how on earth he, of all people, had become some kind of “comedy star.” After his whole life and career of being a serious dramatic actor. They both seemed apparently quite bemused by it all.
I could say, “so what - as long as he just calls the balls and strikes”
. . . but then I remember the last guy who said that . . .
