If you're planning to go to the 2014 Annual Fall Meeting of the American Physical Society in Illinois this Saturday, you might be in for a bit of a surprise with the final talk of the day.
Because that's when plasma physicist Dr John Brandenburg will present his theory that an ancient civilisation on Mars was wiped out by a nuclear attack from another alien race.
In his bizarre theory, Dr Brandenburg says ancient Martians known as Cydonians and Utopians were massacred in the attack - and evidence of the genocide can still be seen today. Back in 2011 the scientist first postulated that the red colour on Mars could have been due to a naturally occurring thermonuclear explosion.
'The Martian surface is covered with a thin layer of radioactive substances including uranium, thorium and radioactive potassium - and this pattern radiates from a hot spot on Mars,' he told Fox News at the time.
'A nuclear explosion could have sent debris all around the planet.'
But since then he has advanced his theory to the level that he now no longer thinks it was a naturally occurring explosion - but rather one planned by an intelligent alien race.

Just speculation but maybe close, I would say that Titan would have a better chance of having life before earth than any where else.

The Martian surface is covered with a thin layer of radioactive substances including uranium, thorium and radioactive potassiumSo is the Moon, particularly the Ocean of Storms generally, and southeast of Copernicus, specifically.
But the patina is over the entire surface of the Moon, and is evidence of 4.57 billion years of cosmic ray bombardment, and probably whatever highly massive primordial progenitor it was that hollowed out the Imbrium impact.
Mars atmosphere for most of its long history - and I don't think they've yet divided up that history into ages, as they have the Moon, since the principle of "superpositioning" is much more difficult to apply on a planet with as thin an atmosphere as the Martian - along with that planet's nearly non-existent planetary magnetic field - make a poor shield against a wide spectrum of cosmic rays.
Nevertheless, it might help to explain why Mars two asteroid moons share its red stain, though that could be explained as easily by pyroclastic volcanism, from the largest volcanoes yet discovered in our star system.
I'm always open to outlandish claims, but this is pretty off the scale. I will presume to credit the Dr. with not actually knowing what this civilization called itself. He's using the Cydonian name as one would is describing the Mayan, I hope.
It's a safe bet his paper at this conference isn't behind a pay wall.

I got to hear Art Bell only a few times so I have no opinion.
Bell was the master of the interview. His skill was in getting people to tell their own story, without indicating his judgment on their credibility. He could talk to legitimate scientists as well those like the goofy woman who claimed an alien reptilian lover. He did not believe all the crazy stuff, but he could draw out those who did without humiliating them.
His shows were a lot like all-night talks around the campfire with a bunch of buddies.
And I also liked the way Bell sometimes held up one of his cats to a webcam (he broadcasted from his house). Bell's calls were not screened, which added to the entertainment.
Noory goes along with whatever the nightly flavor of lunacy might be. He seems like a very nice guy, but sometimes I want to scream at him when the guests are utter loons.

Interesting that the Ancient Martians named their civilizations with Greek words.
Kind of like the Planet Krypton.

I'd expect over time that Mars red color would be covered with the same star dust that blankets Earth's moon and would be more of a lunar color. Perhaps he is suggesting the red dusting is a continuing process.
