Remember "Band Aid" back in 1985, the project that raised funds to help Africans during the huge drought they were having? Well, they've done it again, and this time, it's about Ebola.
Midge Uri and Sir Bob Geldof teamed up again to re-do the song "Do They Know It's Christmas" with updated lyrics that change the focus from drought to the Ebola virus. Several British artists showed up for the song's taping, including the band One Direction, Seal, Sinead O'Connor, and Bono of U2.
I watched the video and the song is pretty well-done with the new lyrics and all. One bit of warning: the first 20-30 seconds of the video show the removal of a dead Ebola victim from her home by germ-suited workers. It's a grim scene.
Oh...as of this morning's release of the video, in the first 5 minutes, it has raised over 1.5 million British pounds for Ebola research.
Here's the VIDEO.
I guess there still won’t be any snow in Africa this year.
How does one go about getting a job where results don’t matter?
Even on top of Mt Kilimanjaro if you believe Al Gore.
I saw an article this morning where they addressed that rather horrid “c*ck-up” in the original song. They’re pretty sorry that line was in there.
They also changed Bono’s original line “Well tonight thank God it’s them/Instead of you”, which Bono has said he “utterly despised”.
Both Peaks?
I wonder how much of the money raised will actually go towards “Ebola research” and how much will be spent on “overhead.”
Well I will say, it still was a thousand times better than “We Are The World”, and that dreadful remake they did for Haiti.
Bruuuuuuuuuuce is back?
Nooooope.
Although, Geldof did say that there are supposed to be versions of this song with German, French, and American artists released soon.
I have heard nothing more about this.
Now that "Do They Know It's Christmas" is kind of tired after 30 years, I guess it's time to come up with another feel-good holiday song with a catchy and repetitive chorus that will open our wallets up at the malls.
War is definitely not over and children are still starving in Africa. And I reckon Ebola will still be with us years from now when they come up with yet another fund-raising song. But the music will make us feel good and keep those cash registers ringing - count on that anyhow.
Now only if they could retire that insipid Wham! “Last Christmas” song....Gayest song, ever.
They are late to the cause. Africa has had a bunch of ebola songs. In part because there were conspiracy theorists there saying that it was hysteria and that ebola wasn’t real, it was just a government plot (and that it was being used to kill of people).
They had to create an “ebola is real” campaign to get people to listen up.
Here the government/media is trying to downplay the threat caused by ebola. Never in history had there been a reported case in America, now we’ve seen several inside a few months and two deaths so far.
Oh, gag....I utterly despise BOTH of those songs, along with “Christmas Shoes”. I have to either change stations or turn off the radio when those come on.
BTW, I was watching a BBC report about this recently. It said that "Band Aid" came under criticism for the original because there weren't any women in the original singing...they just brought in Banarama for the chorus. You know where their priorities were!
Never understood the appeal with that “Last Christmas” song with George Michael. And I’m a huge fan of Christmas music. Even the sappy ones I mostly like. But I agree, that George Michael one is pretty awful. Another overplayed Christmas song I never liked was “Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer.” That one will also make me change the station.
The one song of this type that was actually good was ‘Sun City’.
