JURUPA VALLEY (CBSLA.com) — A toddler was severely injured Wednesday morning when the family’s pit bull attacked him, ripping off the child’s ear.

The incident happened shortly before 7:45 a.m. in the backyard of a home on Pontiac Avenue in Jurupa Valley, the Riverside Department of Animal Services said.

The child, who is about 1.5 years old, was being babysat by his grandmother and was supposed to be taking a nap when the attack occurred.

“Somehow the boy ended up outside in the backyard with the dog and that’s when the grandmother heard the boy screaming,” Fuller said.

The dog, named Poncho, ripped off the child’s left ear

The boy was taken by ambulance to Loma Linda University Medical Center for treatment.

Riverside County Animal Services dispatched two officers the home to retrieve the dog for euthanasia.

When they arrived, neighbors were wielding baseball bats.

“They were standing outside with bats because they heard the attack and went out to help the boy,” Officer Tiffany Fuller said.

The dog did not show any sign of aggression when officers approached the animal and the owner said they had never experienced any prior issued with the dog.

It’s all about good breeding and good socialization. My male Rottweiler is trustworthy because we bought a good dog and took the time to socialize and train him.He will still protect if needed but he takes the time to think before he acts.

Trike? LOL! Yup. I goofed again. The “I” is only two letters off from the “Y”.

“”But he was a good dog. He was just turning his life around. He was in the church choir, was fostering some puppies and had applied to attend obedience school next year.””

That’s funny and funny how we come to expect those excuses when it comes to the “other” predators. We’re getting to be an awful cynical nation and I can’t understand why... (s)

I guess everyone missed this part of the story. Toddlers should never go unsupervised or left alone with any animal.

Most little toddlers that age would be in a playpen for a nap and not be able to go outside the house.

All dogs do. I’ve seen little kids bitten by everything from Pit Bulls to Beagles. You have be very careful with any little kid and a dog. They just don’t recognize the warning signs the dog is trying to give them.

I have a Pyrenees/lab mix. He has the saddest eyes and the most adorable face. He is a chick magnet.

To this day children will just walk up to him and grab him by the face/ears so as to hug and kiss him.

It scared me the first couple of times, and I reprimanded the children that unknown dogs are not safe to hug. If they do it to my dog (who will never in a million years bite anyone), they are gonna do it to the wrong dog someday.
