tech guy says (after soldering once) that it is unrepairable

If soldering isn't fixing the problem, a more drastic measure would be to order a new (or used) motherboard. Depending upon the laptop, you might be able to pick one up cheaper than a soldering job.

Also, you don't need to panic about getting your files off of the computer. You can pick up a USB hard drive adapter from Best Buy that will allow you to remove your notebook hard drive and connect it via USB to another computer, allowing you to get your files off of it.

In every city, there are plenty of cell phone/laptop repair places around that can fix/replace broken charge pins.

Why so many companies have gone to these cheap bendable pins in their phones and laptops is beyond me.

But there are plenty of places springing up to fix them.

.tech guy says (after soldering once) that it is unrepairable.

I got that same bullshit story when the power connector came loose on the board on one of my laptops.

1.Carefully take apart Laptop (google it, i’m sure there is a video or instructions on the net)
2. goto store (radio shack,frys..) and buy a soldering IRON, and a solder sucker and some solder wick as well as some good electronics solder.
3. remove old power adapter plug from board and replace, part is $1 Dollar at All Electronics in Van Nuys, Ca.

you could do the entire job for $40 and fix yourself if you are a little handy.

over the years as many desk computers were on their last legs, I had the hard drive pulled and put in a stand alone unit so my data was accessible as I upgraded. (when the host computer had bit it's last byte and not able to let me transfer easily).

On my Asus, the power plug is on a separate small circuit board. I have replaced the board 3 times myself. The part is cheap on eBay and YouTube has step by step videos on how to do it.

Search your model number and power jack on eBay first. The listing linked to the YouTube video

Bane of most laptops, since the connector is inserted into the machine and it moves around.

Get a hard drive enclosure on Ebay for like 5 bucks and you can take your lappy apart and pull the drive and use the enclosure to get any files off that you want.

And my recommendation on your next lappy: A Mac Book Air. Good luck.

Basically find another pc unit like yours, and put your current hard drive in. Should be good to go. If it’s old check local craigslist or go ebay.

Thanks to you all! Free Republic is great...

I found a way to barely Charge the laptop again by finding it’s “Sweet Spot”....but I can tell the Sweet Spots are becoming few and far between...so your advice has been invaluable. (right now it’s sitting on it’s back with a book strategically located to push on the charge connection and it is working)

On the next one buy a 90 degree adapter for the plug end.
This was suggested to me by a tech.
I had the same thing happen with my Asus.
I was steady enough to solder a new plug the first time but, The second time it ended up in recycle minus the hard drive which I plugged into my desktop and retrieved every thing I needed then I formatted it and use it for back up storage.
$1100 down the drain. It lasted a month past warranty.

I have done this on older Dell laptops with munged up power plugs...but it takes some skill at getting into one, soldering and getting it back together.

Find a Service manual for your laptop online.
Disassemble as far as needed to get to the power input port.
Unsolder the plug from the board it is soldered to...paying attention to polarity.
Cut the plug from the end of the power supply cord...prepare the cord for soldering to the board...paying attention to polarity.
Solder the appropriate leg of the power supply cable to the appropriate place on the board on the laptop.
Reassemble with cord leading out the opening in the case where plug used to be.
Test. No need for battery anymore.
