Does the Globe ever endorse Republicans? I’d guess they probably endorsed Weld in 1994.
“Does the Globe ever endorse Republicans?”
I never recall it happening. The only thing I can think of is that John Henry (owner of the Red Sox) bought the paper earlier this year. MAYBE, MAYBE he’s trying to moderate the paper’s image? ???
“Id guess they probably endorsed Weld in 1994.”
Maybe? I honestly don’t know.
I still have a copy of the paper from the week of the ‘94 election, since I was in Boston at the time (mainly because they were so wrong about what was going to happen). I can’t recall if they endorsed Slick Willie Weld or not, or his then-wife’s cousin, Mark Roosevelt. Roosevelt was so far behind in the polls and it was such a given that Weld had it in the bag, any endorsement of Roosevelt would’ve looked pathetic.
In fact, the whole time I was in Boston, the only place I saw a Roosevelt placard or sign was in the old North End. You just knew it was going to be a total wipeout. Of course, had Weld not turned out to be a Dem agent/Clintonista, there could’ve been a serious paradigm shift in the state in that election. Weld did nothing to help the MA GOP at all. Even more telling, he didn’t want Willard to win over Ted the Swimmer, because that would’ve made Willard the big star in MA and Weld would’ve been pushed down to second banana. RINOs are pretty brutal with each other, y’know, especially the prima-donnas.
