Southern Florida Threatens to Secede Due to Fear of Climate Change

Threats of a state seceding from the country, or a part of a state creating its own state due to political differences, typically don’t go anywhere.

Well, except for that one time in the 1860’s.

Texas and Vermont both threatened to do so out of frustration with the policies of George W. Bush and Barack Obama, but both remain part of the United States. There have been several attempts over the last few decades to carve Californian up into as many as six separate states.

Now, some in Southern Florida are toying with the possibility of launching a secession effort from the northern part of the state.

Why would the heavily liberal area consider sacrificing their share of all that sweet, sweet, Disney related tax revenue? Apparently it’s because the government in Tallahassee isn’t doing enough to combat climate change.

South Miami Mayor Walter Harris believes that rising sea levels due to global warming will cause the everglades to disappear and possibly lead to a nuclear disaster.

Sorry but I disagree as I live in Collier County, one of the last conservative strongholds. If southern Florida were to go ( and I agree it wouldn’t be much of a loss), I’d have to move. I think much of Naples and Collier County would follow.

I believe most people in Polk, Highlands, Manatee, Lee and Sarasota Counties along with Hillsborough would vote to stay in North Florida and not go with Liberal South Florida.

If climate change is a global issue, why does seceding make any difference?

I remember those days too. (Yes, I’m a native Floridian, and the rest of the family still lives there.)

Miami and the East Coast Strip as far north as Palm Beach is easy to visualize.

Imagine Neu Yuk Shity South, but with palm trees. Visualize the same population of Trough Feeders - Black Urban Ferals, Hispanic Ferals in endless variety, and the nervous producers eyeballin’ the social predators. Think birght sunshine part of the year and sunshine and rain and sun the other half. So much water and rain that humidity becomes your enemy instead of snow.

Pray the AC never quits.

Don’t forget, hurricanes instead of blizzards/ice storms.

I didn’t leave Orlando until late July. The weather was miserable the whole time - the base ran out of toilet paper and the air conditioning failed. The cockroaches were as big as small dogs. The only place worse was San Angelo, Texas, two years in the future. But my next training station would be the lovely Presidio of Monterrey; a place I still visit in my dreams.

What language did you learn?

Instead of building a fence, and spending tax money I have a better idea (already posted).

Let the new state boundary run along the various canals, rivers and Lake Okeechobee. My proposed boundary would be at Stuart, on the Atlantic Ocean and run west along the various canals and rivers, through Lake Okeechobee and then west along other canals and rivers to Fort Myers on the Gulf of Mexico.

There are only 19 bridges that cross this line. Our only costs would be erecting 38 signs announcing you are entering/exiting the new state.

BTW - that would also exclude the new state’s access to money generated in the entertainment complex called Orlando-Kissimmee. But then, that identifies the real reason, IMHO, for this dumber than normal political move.

I agree with the fence, with a wall and moat.

And that moat would be perfect for an alligator farm!

How about we do something like the Berlin Air Lift to keep you supplied in an area surrounded by the enemy.

I was just in the Everglades and south Florida two weeks ago. It didn’t look like the sea was swamping the area. None of the rangers and tour people we talked to in the Everglades said anything about rising seas levels.

"never been to Florida"

If you like the feeling that you're walking around inside a sauna even when you're not, you'll love Florida. The humidity is just too much for me.

Maybe the familiar face has something to do with being from central Florida! It has always surprised me, wherever I go, people think they know me. Rarely, do they.

I lived in Orlando and Winter Haven as a child before being raised in Gainesville. Then I flew the coop to go to college, and eventually made my way to the Midwest. I miss the old Florida. Sometimes when I’m in rural places, it seems more like it used to be.
