I have a Dell notebook that's about 5 years old. Windows 7.
It works fine most of the time, but every few hours it goes into a mode where the CPU goes straight to 100% usage and stays there, making it unusable.
Sometimes it self corrects after 15 minutes or an hour, or sometimes I have to do a hard reboot.
Then it works fine again for a while.
Any suggestions?
If it’s not malware then my bet is that you’re using Symantec virus protection. Almost as bad as malware when it comes to grabbing your CPU at the base of its snarklies.
I’ll do that the next time it starts doing it.
Call up task manager, tell it “show processes from all users” and see which one does it.
Sometimes it might be two conflicting programs.
bfl
Symantec. Just ran a full scan yesterday. Found one problem, which was supposedly removed.
I would check for the Ebola virus.
Has the computer traveled in Sierra Leone or Liberia recently?
I had a problem with flash eating up CPU and crashing in Chrome.
It had two plugins that were competing for resources; no problem after disabling one.
You might want to turn off the indexing service. That can get things wrapped around the axle.
Could be a classic case of Win Rot.
Down on the right where the clock is ,turn off(go in their properties) some the junk that runs on bootup
Symatec. That is your problem. It is a crap program. Uninstall it. Install better anti virus. Crap AV includes Symantec, AVG, McAffee. Try Avast. Have had good luck with it.
Just buy a new computer.

Microsoft
Try Process Explorer (freeware)

Much better than the task manager.
Get a can of compressed air. Flip the laptop over. Find the air vent where the CPU is. Give that sucker a good couple of blasts of air to clean out the dust. Give some shots to the other vents while you’re doing it. Reboot. You’ll thank me later.
You probably have a lot of stuff running in the background. Crap that websites and other things have put into your system.
blowing the dust out is good but be careful not to spin the fan too fast or you’ll burn out the bearing in it.
do it right now and copy-paste it for us, you don’t need to wait for it to go to 100% if it is malware
Watch out for websites with excessive ads and scripting that overloads your system. Those sites will drive up your CPU usage and sometimes crash your system forcing a cold boot.
Indeed. I’m not saying put the tube right next to the vent and blast for 15 seconds. Keep it about 4 inches away and use some short bursts ... not at once ....
If this is true, you must quarantine the ‘W’ key for the next 21 days...
