Microsoft has released a Technical Preview of its upcoming Windows 10 operating system with an announced launch window of "later in the year" for 2015, eliminating earlier speculation that it may launch in April of 2015.
But what April will bring is the firm's annual Build conference where more information on Windows 10 will be available. This Technical Preview's license runs out on April 15, 2015, so the timing will be perfect. After an unsuccessful attempt to bridge desktop and mobile operations in Window 8, Microsoft opted to move two steps forward, skipping the Windows 9 name and heading straight for 10 in next year's version.
Windows 10 is said to work more like Windows 7 than 8, focusing strongly on Windows apps. We'll see a return of the long lost Start Menu and a redesign of the layout, complete with resizable "latest" and traditional apps. A new features called Snap Assist will let users pull apps from other desktops within Task View. This Task View feature will show a thumbnail view of all open apps, much like Mac's Expose.
With a focus on unification, Microsoft said at its recent conference that Windows 10 will be the same operating system running on everything from desktops to smartphones. In fact, the new OS is said to be the driving force behind its new smartphone platform.
Although the new operating system will not be free, as some rumors suggested, Microsoft Indonesian president Andreas Diantoro confirms that it will be a free upgrade for all Windows 8 users.
It looks like we'll have to wait for April's Build event for more information regarding price and official release date.
and they are just skipping over 9 because....?
is this just an excuse for microsoft to have a version number that’s the same as apple’s os version?
There’s no rhyme or reason to the name really.
After all, You’re talking about the same company that went from Xbox 360 to Xbox One. GO FIGURE.
Microsoft should be ashamed of themselves after Win 8. Win 8 should have been packaged as a video game entitled “Bug Hunt”
They' re sleeping. It's not called Windoze for nothing.
Free XPP.
Did computer programs get renamed for some special reason?
I know hard drive directories got renamed "folders" to make the technically illiterate feel more comfortable.
I’ve had no problems with Windows 8, except figuring out how to dispose of the toy (phone) interface. Most of the complaints I have seen (not including anyone on this thread) deal with the enforcement of DRM on movies and some music. I also had a problem with the Amazon video player, but Amazon’s customers eventually figured out a work around; Amazon never fixed it.
RE: What the hell is all the “apps” crap?
We (Software Developers ) have always named our programs, Applications. This name has been there for as far as I can remember.
I use Windows 8.1. I skipped 7. So my experience is with Vista.
So ...
I don’t get this issue with the old start menu. I like the tile based start menu. I really like it. Can somebody explain to me why we want to go back to the old start menu. I just don’t get it.
Attempting a wmi query with 9xx picked for the operating system could possibly do bad things for people. I support the name change from a system engineer standpoint.
So will it be cheaper to buy a discounted windows 8 now and get the free upgrade or just buy windows 10 then, or will they price windows 10 at the same level as windows 8?
Strange isn't it? Just a few months ago it was "Windows 9 this" and the "new Windows 9 that" and suddenly, without any explanation, it has become Windows 10.
If you like your Windows 8.1, you can keep your Windows 8.1...
We’ve spoken about this at length in other threads about Windows 10.
Microsoft skipped 9 because legacy coding may exist that calls “Windows 9*” to get both Windows 95 and Windows 98. Since that would also get Windows 9, they made the decision to skip it to prevent issues with legacy applications.
And yes, there are still instances of Windows 98 in use in the world.
It will probably be an improvement. At least it isn’t over Steve Ballmer’s ample, dead body. Leadership change at MSFT was long overdue.
The same reason why they named the newer xbox, xbox360 years ago. xbox 2 v playstation 3 made is sound behind. So presto, XBOX360.
