I remember watching a documentary on them years ago. It got to the “no procreations” part and my first thought was “well, then, how are there more Shakers?” Turns out you have to join..or something. Eh..but they make good furniture!

Actually, they took in orphans, back in the day, and at a certain age, probably 18, the orphan could leave without a problem.

Probably come back, too, within a reasonable amount of time.

At some point, the communities made the decision not to take in or accept any more members.

A quick lookup says that there may be two of them left.

At the opposite end, in the mid-1800s, there was a sex commune in Oneida, NY. Eventually, the members realized that they’d have to make a living some how, so they turned to making silverware.

Any way, the commune booted out one of its more aggressive members, who, in a fit of pique, after a string of various failures, directed his anger, and gun, at then-POTUS, James Garfield...
