(Vanity) Is THIS what we need to do?

With the news of the infection by Ebola of a health care worker in Texas this morning, I'm beginning to think that it's time for strong...and mean draconian...measures that may ensure the safety of the majority of Americans.

In 1996, the late author Tom Clancy published a book entitled "Executive Orders". In it, the protagonist, Jack Ryan, had just become the President of the US after a successful kamikaze attack that destroyed Congress, the Joint Chiefs, the Supreme Court, and, of course, the president.

In the course of the book, certain forces attempted or accomplished several things to upset the world balance of power. One of these things was the successful use of the Ebola virus as a weapon of mass destruction. It was deployed in several US cities and would go on to cause thousands of deaths.

When President Ryan was confronted by this attack, he initiated a quarantine plan, 'Curtain Call'. He went on national television to address the nation and let them know what was going to happen.

The following is an excerpt from 'Executive Orders'. It is part of that speech Ryan gives.

"Accordingly, by executive order of the President, your government is taking the following actions:

One, until further notice, all schools and colleges in the country will be closed.

Two, all businesses except those providing essential services-the media, heath-care, food, law-enforcement, and fire protection- will also be closed until further notice.

Three, all places of public assembly, theaters, restaurants, bars, and the like, will be closed.

Fourth, all interstate travel is suspended until further notice. This means all commercial air travel, interstate trains and buses, and private-passenger automobiles. Trucks carrying foodstuffs will be allowed travel under military escort. The same is true of essential supplies, pharmaceuticals, and the like.

Fifth, I have activated the National Guard in all fifty states and placed it under federal control to maintain public order. A state of martial law is now in force throughout the country."(Emphasis mine)

He didn't mention international travel in the speech. It was assumed that would also be stopped until further notice.

Now...we don't (as far as I know) have multiple outbreaks all over the country of Ebola...yet. The measures taken did eventually curtail the outbreak and it eventually died out. They were draconian, but they accomplished their goal.

The question is: Should we now implement something along these lines to control the possible spread of Ebola?

In the book, the Secretary of Transportation refused the president's order. He was summarily dismissed by the president. The deposed SecTrans said to the head of the FBI that he could arrest the President for giving an illegal order. The FBI director refused, stating that "Somebody's going to have to decide what the law is first".

Is it now time to implement a national quarantine? I know the Constitutional danger involved, especially with the current occupant of the White House. ' President Ryan' eventually ended the state of martial law.

This president may not.

No. Something Obola and his rainbow staff would like to do. Just ban travel from Ebola countries, NO TROOPS to Africa, quarantine anyone coming to the US from Africa via another route.

What about transmission of the disease in this country? What can be done about that? It’s a fantastic idea to stop international travel fro those affected countries...but what about us?

So far only two have been infected, and those are clear cut cases. I would worry if another showed up infected not associated with Africa or the people that have it now.

That would be last resort. Like if the Spanish flu reared its ugly head again.
Obama would like nothing better than declare ML. Suspend civil liberties and elections. He could be King for life or until the Military grows balls and gives him the Benito Treatment.

Absolutely, unequivocally, 100% ... NO NO NO and NO again!

It is NOT easily spread. It CAN be contained and fairly easily with the correct infrastructure. This is not an air-born virus. It’s “shelf live” is short.

Where on Earth is this wild “the sky is falling the sky is falling” attitude coming from?

I would extend that worry even if another case pops up that is related to the health care worker who got it from Duncan - no sure way to tell how many lines of contact were implemented prior to her realizing something was amiss.

No. Especially not with the POS we have in charge.

He and his boyfriends and fellow travelers would like nothing BETTER than to declare a military cordon across America - complete with roundups of enemies of the government (conservatives, preppers, patriots) and President-For-Life declarations.

No way in hell.

Uh . . . no.

And just tell me why you believe that a government that implements these policies would ever give up such power once acquired.

Although I have to say that the idea of closing all colleges does have a certain appeal.

What say I? Handful of cased, most of which were brought in specifically for treatment, and a single death. I think it's a little early to be shutting down the entire country.

Oh, and I think that President Ryan lacked the constitutional authority to take the actions he took. But that's just me.

What’s with the European dating system? 12/10/2014? or has it always been this way and I never noticed? Hard to believe.

No, not a joke.

However I DO NOT support such an action. I just have heard from many who are scared. If this crap gets out of control, what ARE we going to do? I don’t have an answer, and fairly sure those bozos in Washington don’t have one either.

Martial law is the LAST thing I want to see. I was merely suggesting a course of action. It appears....likely a wrong one.

Things probably wont get that out of hand. This time.

In a bad enough situation I think there will be severe restrictions on travel but not an all out ban because of the economy.

And yes, there will be even more egregious exercise of dictatorial edicts. Nobody would call it martial law — even if that is what it boils down to.

Lighten up Francis.

Seriously, when it starts happening outside of the hospital I might get worried.

Also, when it happens in more than one place, I might get worried.

Its a serious virus, but it is very early in the game for what you are suggesting.
