Seeds genetically engineered to grow into glow-in-the-dark plants are expected to be mailed to 1,000 people across the U.S. later this year.

San-Francisco startup Glowing Plant will ship the first version of its flagship product starting in December, the company said in an update on its blog today.

The seeds belong to arabidopsis plants, which are related to mustard and cabbage. The company is inserting genes into the plants from other organisms, including fireflies, to give them bioluminescence — the ability to glow via a biochemical process.

Not only that — buy solar panels and generate electricity from the plant light.

Seeds genetically engineered

Actually, they just picked them up at a garden spot in Japan. Some place called Fukushima ...

They have already had Glo-fish (genetically modified zebra danios, tiger barbs and white skirt tetras), sheep, rabbits, pigs, monkeys, dogs, and cats. Why not plants?

Personally, I think that naturally-colored tropical fish are gorgeous without having to genetically modify the fish by inserting fluorescence genes.

I think there’s a warning on the packets that say; DO NOT EAT.

This company is in San Fran. They should engineer the gene which codes the proteins for the seed coat. Insert it in the marijuana gene, and you’d have glow in the dark seeds. They would be a tremendous hit (pun intended).

I never found the glowing fish very appealing at all. Their colors are off.

I see that a lot of them are deformed. I guess the breeders are interested in their colors, not their health or conformation.
