SUDV is its own strain and was the first known breakout event; there have been multiple outbreaks since 1976. Interestingly, the EBOV outbreak in Zaire was concurrent with the SUDV outbreak in 1976, so maybe history is repeating itself. Or maybe — more likely — it’s hysteria.

I’m thinking that hysteria is the most contagious aspect of these outbreaks. Most people have never heard of Ebola or Marburg until now, and people are always terrified of the unknown, even when the known is demonstrably much more deadly.

Influenza season is rapidly approaching—how many Americans will die of that without anyone showing the least bit of fear or concern?
