For me the most important invention was indoor plumbing..I remember chamber pots under beds at grandmas farm. I agree that indoor plumbing is the number one best improvement to the lives of modern humans. The rest of our technological innovations pale in comparison to that.

I could probably deal with using a privy, but pumping/hauling water for cooking, cleaning and bathing would be rough. On the other hand, living without electricity...
