Safety has improved dramatically but it can never be 100%. When I was young back in the 60s and 70s the drumbeat of deaths was fairly constant. I was even at a race where a racer died. It was sickening to those of us who enjoyed the sport. Before my time but the 55 Le Mans crash which took out 80 spectators must have been the absolute worst.

Last grand Prix death...yes

Been 3 open wheel F1 racing car deaths since

Indy is most deadly circuit period for any division
