In the wake of increasingly successful divestment actions aimed at carbon-producing industries, coal has turned into the new tobacco. While even natural gas mining has its vocal supporters despite the dangers of fracking, the supporters of coal are shrinking as the clean coal touted by candidates of both political parties looks more and more like an oxymoron.
But what about the people who live in coal country? What is happening to them as the institutional investors withdraw their assets from the companies topping the Carbon 200 list? As institutional investors including foundations pull their assets out of coal, are foundations and others dealing with the impacts on the populations of Appalachian communities and other places?
AP writers Adam Beam and John Raby wrote last week about the closing of mines in Eastern Kentucky and West Virginia, historically one of the poorest regions of the U.S., and the shrinkage of their public school populations. Because school funding typically tracks school populations, the loss of students due to families moving out of coal country means that schools in places like Pike County, Kentucky, and McDowell County, West Virginia are hard pressed to provide quality educational programming or even stay open.

If coal was pink or green instead of black this wouldn’t be an issue.
Democrats “First we create the problem then we come to the rescue!”
The best way to help coal country is to invest in coal to liquids powered by thorium reactors. The nation will be an exporter of diesel and gasoline, costs for transportation will drop, and this will ultimately drag down retail prices.
In turn, this will create more jobs, stimulate the economy and reduce the cost of living for all Americans.
There’s a war on coal. Don’t let the leftists pretend otherwise. Coal is an abundant, inexpensive, American source of energy. Extensive use of coal has historically powered American prosperity, and would continue to do so if the communist Demonic Party got out of the way.
The democrats are the enemy of coal, and of America.

Yes, “never let a good crisis get away...”. And if they do not have one, they invent it.
(Chicken Little was a DemocRat)
Great observation. The reality is that the people in these regions will get by. Coal has been shrinking in economic importance in this region for decades causing out migration. Those who stay will (or do) rely on government transfer programs, barter, and of course the drug trade to make ends meet. The never ending cycle.
Exactly why democrats oppose it.
Democraps are Racist!
I read somewhere on FR that Farmers Almanac predicts an even colder winter this year.
Also ....Obama lies about everything....so he also lies about Global Warming....
Basically the Sun's magnetic field is in decline ...leading to less sunspots.
Last time this happened there was a 400 year long mini ice age (1350 to 1750).
The Operating & Maintenance Cost, including the fuel cost, is cheaper for coal power plant than a fuel gas plant.
But with the regulations and limitations set by the government, the total cost for electricity from a new coal plant is higher than a new Natural Gas plant.

That would be the communist War on Coal, now wouldn't it?
Most everybody sees that; it's not news.
How's that white privilege working out for you?
Classic Hegelian dialectic.
Pure evil.

The best way the people in “COAL COUNTRY” can help themselves is to quit voting in “DEMOCRATS”!
Your plans makes way to much sense.
They will waste another 20 years pushing solar instead. (backed by massive subsidy of course).

Coal is Solar Energy ... just in a more efficient form
