Total urban myth. KISS is just a rock band and not a very good one at that - though they did put out one classic rock ballad ("Beth"). But they marketed themselves pretty well and used gimmicks, like spending the 1970s in silly clown makeup, and using pyrotechnics in shows, to get way more popular than they deserved to be.

As for being satan worshippers, that's completely baseless. Not even the band themselves would want to be known for that.

We've chatted just a few days ago and you're far more tuned into pop culture than I am. So I ask: What rock singer (or band) was known for biting the head off snakes (or perhaps it was a duck) back in the 60s or 70s? Was that another urban myth? If not, was it a real creature or just a prop? Yep, I am so naive and clueless about this stuff! Someone even told me that Eddie Haskell became a famous rock star but even I didn't believe that. :)

Beth is just about their best song. Never did care for them but I didn’t hate them either. They were a decidedly average band in an age of giants, and like you said, they made their living off of their shtick.

Their 1st live album as AWESOME. To this day songs from that double album make this old guy wanna rock out.

Black Diamond just killer

Long verson of Let Me Go Rock & Roll, while simplistic still makes this ol guitar player happy when I get to hear it.
