I have a spear. I have two very sharp Japanese swords too and I know how to use them. The Glock on my nightstand is the go-to however.
Why not. LOL!
No, it’s actually a plain ol’ Texas Ping List, but I just got too cute for words. LOL!
Yes, it is hard to know what is the best edged weapon. I have just about everything but have never trained in their use at all.
Historically I guess the sword has always been at the top of the list. The Spartans used their “dory” spears which were sharp at one end and sharp enough at the other and killed people by the bushel full but that was part of a highly trained unit.
I know Robert Bruce loved his battle axe and killed a good English Knight with it. I have always wondered if I made a thrust with the spear and a young powerful man grabbed it, he could take it away from me. At one time I would have been the young powerful man but no longer. Still I think I could use it successfully.
........yeah, I’m going down tomorrow to apply for my CSL............(Concealed Spear License)
Prepper spear chucking ping
I’m good with edged weapons, good with fighting, and am good with sticks, but I have never been able to get a feel for the spears in post 27.
I have played with them a number of times and I just cannot connect with them as an exceptional weapon, of course they are still a great spear and dangerous weapon, better than nothing, and so on, but they are sure not what I like.
Skewered, pokerized hey whatever it takes.
Per the Spartans. Interesting show used to be on Netflix called Most Dangerous Warrior. Attempted to show combat between various warriors of different periods who would never have met in reality.
One of the things I found most interesting was the effectiveness in combat of the Spartan, actually hoplite as all the Greeks of the time were outfitted about the same, weapon system.
Turns out that big heavy round shield is not only a great protection, it’s a kick-ass weapon itself. Bash into somebody, knock em off their feet and spear them while they’re down. Or bash em in the head with the side of that 25 pound shield.
In the final showdown, the Spartan beat the samurai, mostly because of that shield.
I have a very old steel handled carpenters hatchet. It has a wide, very sharp, yet thin blade. I have held it and thought to myself that it would be a wicked weapon.
In “All Quiet On The Western Front”, the author mentions that the German soldiers after much hand to hand combat, preferred their sharpened spades to the bayonet. I have also read that the Russian special forces also prefer the sharpened spade.
But the, people will have to do what a home security book said over 45 years ago, which was....”Break apart a pair of scissors and tape it to a broom handle...”
Who socked the scum in the eye?lol
And being in the SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism) he's probably had plenty of practice.
He's definitely the envy of all his SCA buddies right now!
I’ve read that many Samurai preferred a wooden sword inside the house. It didn’t mess up the floors.
Toshiro Mifune did well with a wooden stave in SAMURAI III.
I was a classics major for a while and used to know Greek history very well. I think the main reason the Spartans (and other Greek heavy armed soldiers) were so successful against Persians etc. was their really good armor and shields.
Why the Persians ever thought wicker armor was good, I probably will never understand. At least it was light tho.
This is the one that I prefer and is the version that I carried, I own two of them now, and use them for digging, I haven't caught on to the new version.
