ATLANTA This is one shot even the great Rory McIlroy had no chance to hit.
His golf ball landed in a spectators pocket.
McIlroys tee shot on the 14th hole of the Tour Championship on Friday drifted to the right, clattered into a tree and dropped straight down. A dozen or so fans tried to figure out where it was before one man realized it was in the front right pocket of his shorts.
The worlds No. 1 player was entitled to a free drop under Rule 19-1-a - Ball in motion stopped or deflected by an outside agency - and rules official Robby Ware first had to make sure the man had not moved from when he discovered the ball in his pocket.
The tough part was how to get the ball out.
I wasnt going in there, McIlroy said with a laugh...

McIlroys tee shot lands in spectators pocket
...
It doesn’t count unless he called it on the tee.
Physically impossible;
...
I once caddied for a guy he hit it into a 10,000 crevice at the base of a glacier.
A real golfer would have called the first shot in the pocket of the spectator and the second shot in the cup.
Aw, C'mon!
That's a tad bigger than the pockets on a man's shorts!
If the ball fell straight down and the pocket was “just so” then it’s possible.
Now the odds of it happening?
That’s a statistics question I’d love to know the answer to.
Just like the same baseball fan who caught three foul balls in the same game.
A couple of years ago he hit a shot that stuck in the limb of a dead tree.
The article said it struck the tree and dropped straight down, I’d guess it was a ricochet of some kind and was not actually straight down.
I can happen. my polo brand cargo shorts have extra large pockets on both sides. I don’t snap the flap closed so they “droop” out about 1.5”. Plenty of room for a ball to drop in. Considering all the balls hit in golf since its creation, and that his has reportedly never happened before, it must be a one in 20 Billion event.
Would have been penalized for taking too much time.
Actually would have been hoping for a two stroke penalty.
