The origin of this goes back to Henry Ford being such as nasty Hitler supporter and the resulting refusal of Jewish people to drive a Ford product as a result.
My in-laws would still pick a German car over a Ford product (and now drive Land Rovers and Jags).
Interesting. I always thought that it just referred to large, comfortable automobiles.
