My first computer teacher was a lighter skinned black man who told me of the horrible abuse he suffered in Oakland, California because he dressed decently and got good grades. He was beaten so often for acting white that his parents finally sent him to live with the family of a friend he father had made in the army.
He was one of only four black kids in a rural farming community where he got good grades, was never harassed and got a scholarship to Sac State where he got the education to make a success of his life.
The most amazing part is that he got through Sac State and avoided ending up being indoctrinated to go through life with a chip on his shoulder.
