This story was ripped off by the Twilight Zone. It was an almost identical story of a girl who took off from the East Coast to drive across country. She had died in a wreck at the beginning of her trip, but she didn’t know she had died. She kept seeing the same man by the side of the road everywhere she went. Same story. I know he’s dead and doesn’t know it.
The main character doesn't know who he is?

Yes, the story is identical down to every detail, except it’s a girl instead of a guy. She even picks up a hitchhiker military guy. He ditches her thinking she’s nuts, because she’s so freaked out by the guy by the side of the road—the real hitchhiker—that only she sees. She even stops at the roadside store and is turned away, and in the end she calls home and finds out her mother is in the hospital from a nervous breakdown over her death. In the Twilight Zone episode, she finally picks up the “angel of death” hitchhiker.
