I'm guessing that Linux is what inspired Berkley to open-source
BSD into FreeBSD and NetBSD, since development of both started in 1993. OpenBSD forked from NetBSD in 1995.
Had open source BSD existed in 1993, we probably wouldn't have Linux, but before Linux there was no real reason to open-source operating systems.
