I will be attending the East Texas Symphony next month when they perform the Rachmaninov 3.
Rachmaninoff Symphony #2 conducted by Ormandy is a good one as well.

Not my favorite performance, but my favorite work by my favorite composer—greatest in history. To be honest, I have so many recordings, including Rachmaninoff himself, that picking a favorite is not possible. But I would recommend Valentina Lisitsa.
well we definitely have something in common. My favorite of this piece and the Rach 3rd is my favorite piano concerto. My recollection is it was broadcast live and I was able to capture it to my reel-to-reel live as I watched it. I have listened to many, many versions of this great piece. The tempo is always too slow. This one has an aggressive tempo and the 3rd movement just explodes with energy.

I am reluctant to post an opinion, because of my ignorance of the vast history of classical music. but you hit the sweet spot: Horowitz’s Rachmanioff 3rd Concerto, stirs so much emotion in me, I wait for snow storms before I will listen to it. it is like a movie in my head. It rouses me, and gives me a great confidence in the future.
That is probably a stupid comment, but I can’t express in words the scene in my head when I listen to it. I wish I knew what it meant.

Nothing ignorant about your comment at all. Great art tells you more about yourself than it does about the artist.
Another version well worth watching. Olga Kern didn’t have a dress to wear for the competition and a benefactor took her shopping. Now she has beautiful dresses galore - in fact, it’s a trademark of hers to sport stunning dresses and she changes for the second half of her recitals.
I’ve seen her a couple times in recitals and she has flawless technique and amazing strength and stamina. Gorgeous, as well. Her Rach Preludes are spellbinding.
