I will be attending the East Texas Symphony next month when they perform the Rachmaninov 3.

Not my favorite performance, but my favorite work by my favorite composer—greatest in history. To be honest, I have so many recordings, including Rachmaninoff himself, that picking a favorite is not possible. But I would recommend Valentina Lisitsa.
well we definitely have something in common. My favorite of this piece and the Rach 3rd is my favorite piano concerto. My recollection is it was broadcast live and I was able to capture it to my reel-to-reel live as I watched it. I have listened to many, many versions of this great piece. The tempo is always too slow. This one has an aggressive tempo and the 3rd movement just explodes with energy.

Another version well worth watching. Olga Kern didn’t have a dress to wear for the competition and a benefactor took her shopping. Now she has beautiful dresses galore - in fact, it’s a trademark of hers to sport stunning dresses and she changes for the second half of her recitals.
I’ve seen her a couple times in recitals and she has flawless technique and amazing strength and stamina. Gorgeous, as well. Her Rach Preludes are spellbinding.

My this brings back a lot of memory’s of my dad sitting in the living room listening to a record of a Rachmamonoff concerto puffing on this pipe, with far away look in his eyes
While Horacio Gutierrez's performance of the Third in this old, old hour long TV show may not be especially noteworthy, his dialogue with conductor Andre Previn and Previn's exposition on Rachmaninoff's music in general and the Third in particular is quite enjoyable and informative (the program itself doesn't start until ten and one-half minutes into the first of three parts) - "It's really very, very beautiful music"
Thank you for posting! I still have my vinyl recording of this performance. It’s a perfect delight to see it on video. Horowitz played with such power and passion. It was a performance for the ages.
