In new book, Ryan takes on stubborn GOP orthodoxy

As Congress hurtled toward a government shutdown in the fall of 2013, Rep. Paul Ryan looked around at fellow Republicans who were agitating to shutter national parks, federal agencies and Head Start programs.

"This can't be the full measure of our party and our movement," Ryan writes of that moment in his new book, released Tuesday. "If it is, we're dead and the country is lost."

Such moments of raw frustration pepper Ryan's "The Way Forward: Renewing the American Idea," a book as much about his front-row seat as Republicans' favorite budget wonk as it is about his political future. Ryan is considered a contender for the 2016 GOP presidential nomination.

The book could function both as a fresh campaign-style introduction to readers and a playbook for his party in Congress. In sometimes bracing language, the failed 2012 vice presidential nominee criticizes members of his own party for pushing politically popular ideas over the advice of policy experts.

While there also is plenty of partisan criticism of President Barack Obama and his Democratic allies — he calls the Obama administration "lawless" — the book's personal revelations are the ones that could soften his image as a hard-nosed budget negotiator.

KEYWORDS:
I liked what Paul Ryan did and said in Obama's first term. His message like most Republicans has gotten more complex. I prefer a simple strategy and have not heard one lately. Maybe a double Texas ticket could pull it off. Perry / Cruz?

Paul Ryan just sort of creeps me out a little.

He hasn’t done much to help himself over the last few years either.

I live in the CD just south of Ryan's. I am afraid that Ryan is typical of House leadership. He is an unreliable whore and does not give very good service for your dollar unless you are the US Chamber of Crony Commerce or the like. He is part of the problem and not part of the solution.

Two candidates from the same state causes Electoral College problems.

He sure did. Some republicans still cannot admit it. Crazy Joe Biden took him to the woodshed.

To the contrary. Both Paul Ryan and Sarah Palin absolutely eviscerated the babbling buffoon Biden. Of course, Governor did far better as she utterly reduced Biden to a mewing, puking child. Ryan did fine in the debate but Biden is an easy target.

Make no mistake, by no means am I a supporter of RINO Ryan but I grudgingly admit that he totally trounced Plugs.

While not being a fan of RINO Ryan, the undeniable fact is that Biden was RUTS'd. As proof, check this post. Ryan outscored obama's boy by a total of 1501 to 382.

We wanted so bad to get rid of Obama that we tried our best to be excited about Romney and Ryan. The thought of those two now makes me throw up a little.

Absolute nonsense. Biden acted like a rude five year old. How could you say he won anything. I was embarrassed and appalled by Biden. In a real debate, one persons speaks and then another is allowed to make his or her points. Biden made silly noises like an immature child. The moderator should not have permitted it. I thought that Biden looked like an idiot.
