Yes, they are dead in the traditional sense, but in some ways they are still alive (moving, eating) so that could explain why maggots don’t destroy them, or maybe something in the virus itself could repel flies. It’s a fantasy show, explanations are endless. ;)

It's one of those things that they really goofed up. The zombies are rotting as is obvious by all the rot yet they never produce a bad smell. Rotting flesh manages to just sneak up on people!? In one episode there was a dead dog who was not animated and when they uncovered the blanket exposing the dead dog they all repelled by the smell. I find that very disappointing.

But you are right it's just a fantasy show. I'm perfectly ok with vampires but I hate it when they are having sex or when they don't care about crosses or using ultraviolet bullets. But sure old school vampires are just fine.
