Bake sales used to fuel school's sports teams and clubs, raising money for the kids going away games, nicer uniforms, field trips and so on. But, a new law limits the amount of sugary treats that many bake sales offer. So, starting this Fall bake sales won't be as sweet anymore.
Parents are allowed to sell candy and goodies, but it must meet the smart snack calculator requirement. If it meets all the nutritional requirements, the calories, sugar, fat and sodium, it's ok to sell that cookie. But, if it goes over well it's not allowed and the schools can be fined.
"The Smart Snacks in School Nutrition Program" took effect July 1, it's part of Michelle Obama's 2010 Healthy Hungry Free Kids Act.
Also, in the state of Texas no fried foods are allowed in schools. So, if a parent brings let's say brings a deep fried donut to a bake sale, you can't sell it. The law also states that bake sales can not take place in the same area food is being served or purchased. A table must be set up outside of the lunch area. And a bake sale can't take place until 30 minutes after school gets out.

ridiculous laws
Why are there ANY federal laws about schools or bake sales??
have independent parents do the bake sales off school grounds
“But anal sex is still taught in sex class as a normal alternative, right? I mean, its not unhealthy, like a donut, right?
WINNER!!
BIG laugh over that excellent comment!
She holds no office, she has no authority.... should impersonating a federal official be a crime?
Yes, it should be a crime. Michelle’s interference in our children’s school lunches is a major crime. Leave our children alone!
Next she’ll come out with Mooch Pies, made out of recycled cardboard doused with apple juice and they’ll be required at every bake sale and school cafeteria in the country. Or else.
How on earth does the federal government claim jurisdiction over this?
If the law was passed in 2010, the Democrats would have held both houses of Congress. This is when they were running wild, passing Obamacare and other things for the good of the country!
Bump - to show to my wife for her church’s bake sale next summer.....
I wonder how we survived all those bake sales before these regulations existed.
“How the heck will bureaucrats in Washington DC find out about violations???”
Theres always a government snitch somewhere. Especially in a public school building
I can just imagine His Arrogance, Moo and the Moo-ettes at the evening diner trough, in Martha’s Vineyard, discussing “proper menu choices” and “avoiding pastry sales”.
Well said, Yaelle. This is so skewed. Madness at its most petty.
