The government has no power over the law abiding. That is why they make up laws to imprison people.

No. The government's position is "If we let this plague get started, thousands if not millions will die before we can stop it again."

And that does not even address the costs to society of having to deal with drug addicts robbing and stealing to feed their addiction.
